First on CNN: Ted Cruz apologizes to Ben Carson

Windham, New Hampshire (CNN)The day after winning the Iowa caucuses, Ted Cruz issued an apology to Republican rival Ben Carson for falsely telling Iowa caucusgoers that the retired neurosurgeon planned to quit the race, calling it a "mistake."

Cruz said in a statement Tuesday that his campaign staff saw a CNN report that Carson was dropping out, although CNN had not characterized Carson's actions that way.

"Last night when our political team saw the CNN post saying that Dr. Carson was not carrying on to New Hampshire and South Carolina, our campaign updated grassroots leaders just as we would with any breaking news story," Cruz said in a statement first shared with CNN. "That's fair game. What the team then should have done was send around the follow-up statement from the Carson campaign clarifying that he was indeed staying in the race when that came out."

As much as I hate to say it, I’m beginning to see a pattern to the Cruz behavior. NRSC trashes McDaniel’s certain senate seat. Cruz hires him to work his Mississippi campaign. (As some kind of consolation/apology.) No senate seat, but hey, he got a job working a campaign.

His campaign lies about Carson. After the damage is done, they apologize. Has anyone been fired for that mistake? Of course not. It’s business as usual in politics.

I praise God that He is the one in control. It’s just so unfortunate that it’s “fool me once” again for the US voter.

Seems Trump is whining, "It Ain't Worth It".

I don't believe I have been given any credit by the voters for self-funding my campaign, the only one. I will keep doing, but not worth it!

How much longer before Little Donnie snatches up his ball and goes home?

When and where did CNN correct it? Please show me the link if you have it.

Cruz’s campaign sent messages shortly after CNN’s original tweet around 5pm. The CNN news report was at 6:45 so CNN was still making these claims at that point. Carson’s advisor tweeted at 7:03 that the media claim was false, and tweeted at 7:11 that Carson was going to FL for a change of clothes. That article didn’t say exactly what time it was that Carson put out his clarifying statement but given that the advisor didn’t know until 7:11 to say the FL trip was for a change of clothes, I suspect it was sometime between 7:03 and 7:11. That would have been too late for Cruz’s people to rescind what they had sent to their people at the caucus. And they would have been busy with caucus stuff.

Not so with CNN. When did they get the clarification from CArson and when did they correct their report?

And when has CNN APOLOGIZED for reporting false material? REALLY tacky for CNN to report that Cruz apologized for falsely saying the information that Cruz got from their FALSE REPORT.

Sheesh.

Yes, no conscientious and professional campaign would have spread that information, with the intent of swaying votes at caucus time, without at first double and triple checking it, and especially with the Carson campaign.

Your original post was at least Rubio could beat Hilary, implying Cruz could not. I showed you links to polling that shows your assertion is not correct.
as for Cruz vs Sanders

THey show it’s close, but Cruz is up by 1 point in the most recent polls that I found.

A lot of “Christians” on here calling Cruz slime, a liar, etc, when Cruz just repeated what CNN had reported.

Is it “righteous” to bear false witness?

Too late - the damage is done. He just doesn’t want an ethics complained filed on him.

I’d hardly call Cruz classy, but - Ben - yeah. Slimy is the word that comes to mind when I think of Cruz.

Cruz approved and ran an ad that said Trump got rich from using eminent domain. It was a complete and total lie. Cruz will do anything to win, and his supporters will justify it.

Due to Cruz funding sources, he is a big supporter of CHeap Labor Express in so far as supplying H-1B Visas to tech companies. He is much like Rubio.

BTW, Just heard Sean Hannity talking about Rubio and how he was a tea party candidate too—splendid /s

His supporters will say, just politics, get used to it. Oh, and if you complain you are whining. Only other candidates are held to truth and honesty.

Recheck your timing. As of 6:45 CNN was still reporting this. CArson’s advisor didn’t tweet the “going home for a change of clothes” story until 7:11, after seemingly having been made aware of the issue at 7:03pm.

Somebody give me a timestamp on when CArson’s clarification came out. My bet is sometime between 7:03 and 7:11pm.

It was CNN who had access to the spokesmen for Carson and kept the story alive from about 4:47 until at least 7:03...

When will CNN apologize? And when will the folks here at FR apologize for believing CNN, just as Cruz’s people made the mistake of doing?

FWIW, Cruz’s campaign tactics and heavyhandedness DO NOT reflect well on his character. But that’s my personal opinion. As far as I know I might be the only one who feels so strongly about it.

Thanks for posting a detailed timeliness that is exactly what I thought had happened. CNN is totally misrepresenting their own news reports as they existed at the start of the caucus last night.

And what exactly was it that kept the Cruz team from verifying the report with the Carson campaign?

Do they actually trust CNN?

Look. Cruz squeaked by in Iowa where Evangelical votes rule. One thing he did prove is you can tell the ethanol lobby to pound sand and still win. THAT’S how big the Evangelical vote is there.

The rest of the country has a small fraction in that demo.

If you see a path for Cruz given these facts, enjoy.
