US admiral: Russia's Submarine Activity In The North Atlantic Is At Cold War Levels, Why?

Russia's submarine fleet is more active than it's been in decades in a strategically vital body of water — and US military planners can't seem to figure out why.

US Navy Vice Admiral Clive Johnstone, also head of NATO's maritime command, told IHS Jane's that the US has seen "more activity from Russian submarines than we've seen since the days of the Cold War" in the North Atlantic.

While Johnstone didn't specify which parts of the North Atlantic have seen this uptick, nearly the entirety of the area between North America, the Western European coastline, and the bottom of the Arctic Circle is vital to US and allied security.

And Russia isn't just sending submarines in volume.

It's also sending vessels with what Johnstone describes as unprecedented capabilities within the Russian fleet.

Thanks to "an extraordinary investment path not mirrored by the West," Russian submarines now "have longer ranges, they have better systems, they're freer to operate."

Meanwhile, the crews have demonstrated "a rise in professionalism and ability to operate their boats that we haven't seen before."

Could be they’re taking advantage of the “greater flexibility” of Obama’s second term.

I started to ask if that was Balao-class, and by golly, it was.

Cool.

Would American Boomer crews even notice in this day and age of diversity and sensitivity training? Obama has changed the military mission from defense of America to that of being a vehicle for social change. No disrespect meant to the crews, just the civilian leadership

If they are going to hit Turkey, they might put some submarines off our coast to try and keep us out of the fight.

Am I an admiral now?

Not to worry.

The Russians are running out of hard currency due to collapsing oil prices. American frackers are making sure they get first dibs if prices go back up. Basically that means an oil price ceiling of about $30 a barrel in current dollars. See:

http://www.the-american-interest.com/2016/02/04/lone-star-shale-producers-defy-opec/

Russian state finances are on track to a collapse at the end of this year. See:

The Russian adventure in Syria is particularly at risk.

Great, just great. Russia AND China both looking at economic problems.

What could possibly go wrong?

Scary, because America's ASW system is no where near what it was during the cold war and we are ill equipped to deal with such an intensive threat volume

If you were sitting across the table from Baraq Hussein 0bama, wouldn't it be prudent to be VERY prepared?

I just ran across an excellent unclassified article about our ASW force:

http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a401150.pdf

I was surfing the net the other day and saw a youtube video of a small tsunami that occurred about two weeks ago at Pacific Beach, Wa:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zU4POa_Oz0M

I remembered that was a location of a “NAVFAC”, which was code word for the land based SONAR known as the SOSUS system.

So, I googled navfac pacific beach and that article was in one of the hits.

No, but it shows you've got a better grasp of the situation than Obama.

Not true. The ASW forces are smaller, yes, but capabilities are much greater than during the cold war.
