There's zero similarity between Trump's policy and what is generally considered a "touchback". NUMBERSUSA points out; "The difference between Trump's Touchback and Pence's seems to be that Trump has put a lot of "have-to" steps before the amnesty would be given. Those steps might take years."
And you're right, immigration/border security is being discussed in a very open way. Trump led the charge on that.
Ok - his plan is different from Mike Pence’s which would be valid if Pence was running for President.
But his policy does have touchback even if it’s a years long process. How can he be against illegals not only for the violation of law part, but for the drain on the economy and still allow them to come back in some time down the road?
Trump brought it and pushed it, you are 100% correct. But his plan is flawed because of this.
