My SIL lives in rural SW Missouri where there are a lot of chicken “processing” plants (aka slaughterhouses).
10-15 yrs ago, illegal Mexicans displaced all the Americans working there, most of those displaced went on welfare.
Now imported Somali Muslims have displaced the Mexicans and the Mexicans are on welfare.
It’s weird to drive through these podunk towns and see all the commercial signs in Spanish and Arabic.
Fundamental transformation.
It’s funny how that goes. I remember how Italians ran most of the fish and chip and ice cream shops when I was young in Scotland. When I was last back for a visit in the 80’s, it was mostly Vietnamese running them. Here in California these days it seems to be all the Asians run the donut shops (and do it well, come to think of it...love my donuts). And a tremendous amount of Indians, mostly from Pakistan, seem to be running small motels and 7-11’s these days. Funny how some hard working, motivated nationalities seem to gravitate towards very specific easily managed industries to begin, make a go of it, and when their children grow and become proficient at school, etc., they then take their place higher up the food chain and a new immigrant labor force from another country then gains dominance in those specific markets.
