AP Interview: Pilot in Somalia emergency says security zero

The Serb pilot who landed a jetliner in Somalia with a three-foot hole on its fuselage said Sunday he never doubted that it was caused by a bomb and describes the security surround the airplane at Mogadishu Airport as "zero."

A suicide bomber is suspected to have set off the explosive inside the plane, Somali officials said Saturday. The blast sucked a male passenger out of the plane and forced the aircraft to make an emergency landing Tuesday in Somalia's capital, they said.

The explosion happened about 15 minutes after the plane, with 74 passengers on board, took off from the airport and was at 11,000 feet ascending toward 30,000 feet.

I wouldn’t fly into that sewer, much less fly out! Someone was watching over that plane. Amazing it didn’t disintegrate.

“Someone was watching over that plane. Amazing it didn’t disintegrate.”

Much worse has happened to airliners and they have survived.

The pilot complained about a mob of people around the plane when it landed - airline service personnel, supposedly, but none in uniform and no badges visible.

The plane was serviced, loaded, and took off for its next leg; 15 minutes later the bomb went off.

The pilot's right to worry about tarmac security, but the point is moot - the hole appears to be in the passenger part of the plane, not baggage/cargo.

Good thing he didn't wait until the plane was at 30,000 feet, the the decompression would have probably destroyed the plane.

Passengers were lucky it blew at 11,000 feet instead of cruise altitude.
