Putin was with the KGB for 16 years before heading up the modern equivalent of it, the FSB. Both agencies have a long history of terrorism and deception. The Russians are masters at the complex game of chess. Most of us, unfortunately, have trouble with simple checkers. Russia is currently in the process of restoring the Soviet Union, or something not too much different from it. They're probably laughing their butts off at how easily they have manipulated minds over here. Nothing new really, they've been at it for a long time.
