Is Google hinting at a John Kasich surge in New Hampshire?
Washington Post ^ | 2/9/16 | Philip Bump

-snip-

John Kasich? Tending in New Hampshire? Is that true? And if so, how does this clarify or cloud the crystal ball?

The graph in that tweet is confusing. Another way to look at it is over a longer time period. On Google's proprietary scale of search interest, which runs from 0 to 100, this is how the post-Iowa search traffic in New Hampshire has looked for the five Republicans doing best in the polls. (We're mostly only interested in the candidate who will come in second, since we assume Trump will win easily.)

In the past day or so, Kasich has surged past the other four.

Over the past few hours, he's run about even in search interest with Cruz and Trump. This is from a guy who nationally polls sixth but was working hard in the Granite State.

Kasich is surging among Democrats who plan to vote for Hillary.

But if they were Republicans, they would almost definitely vote for Kasich.;-)

Nope.

Just people wondering who he was and where Dixville Notch is this morning.

Maybe a bunch of people are simply wondering who he is since he got votes last night at midnight.

That could also explain it.

Can’t wait for one of these tech giants to step up and make an absolute fool of themselves by predicting something that doesn’t materialize.

I still want to know if he engaged in any of the threesomes his buddy Condit so loved. I can’t have a President who enjoyed such a thing.

Interesting. I note that Trump doesn’t even show up.

Evidently everyone knew what they needed to about him.

Could be the same here.

We’ll see.

Reading between the lines in ABC exit poll analysis I say Kasich takes second behind Trump and everyone else is logjammed

Google is a liberal shill.

They would rather have Kasich in the Pres election than anyone else....

Heard an interview on the radio news with a first time voter.

He was torn between Kasich and Bernie.

Get this. Wants government under control and....free college.

All this means is people in New Hampshire aren’t paying attention to the candidate’s history. They don’t know him like we do here in Ohio.

couple of interesting vids where voters were trying to decide between Bernie and Kasich simply because they couldn’t bring themselves to vote for Hillary.

He may get some Dem and Indie votes because of that.

It’s as simple as he won Dixville Notch. All the brain dead voters who woke up this morning had no idea who he was, thus the Google searches..

Of the GOPe candidates, Kasich is the least offensive to me.

He was a decent congresscritter and he has executive experience, even if he didn't govern Ohio as a conservative purist.

Yes, Cruz or Trump are much better.

But I think I'd prefer Kasich to Christie, Rubio, or Bush.

Right, just like Bing predicted Iowa. I have searched Kaisch today...”who is john kaisch?”, “how much did Kaisch steal from Lehman brothers/taxpayers?”, “Did Kaisch’s dad bang any housewives on his route?”

Phil Crane’s line to John Anderson in a 1980 Republican debate applies just as well to Kasich:

“John, you’re the classiest Democrat running.”

From what I gather, google search volume can be either a positive or a negative indicator. Low search volume inciates status quo.
