Armageddon for the GOP Establishment
National Review ^ | February 10, 2016 | JEREMY CARL

The night could have gone worse for the GOP establishment-but I'm not really sure how. Not only did Donald Trump win an overwhelming victory in New Hampshire, but the establishment lane of viable candidates got more crowded than it had been going in. And remember that since the current primary calendar was inaugurated in 1976, no GOP nominee has ever emerged without winning Iowa or New Hampshire.

In case you haven't been paying attention, that means that, if history is a guide, the GOP is likely going to be choosing between Donald Trump and Ted Cruz as a nominee, which is enough to have Beltway insiders waking up in cold sweats. Of course, Trump was the biggest winner of the night with a dominant performance that even slightly outperformed his polls. He won virtually all of New Hampshire’s demographic groups and lapped the field, winning more votes than his top two challengers combined....

The other big winner from tonight was less obvious (except to the betting markets, where his odds of winning the nomination soared once the results became clear) and that was Ted Cruz, who finished a relatively distant third behind Trump and John Kasich (more on Kasich later). The reasons it was a great night for Cruz are not immediately obvious from the raw results (although obviously a third place finish in New Hampshire against a tough field after winning Iowa is a solid showing). But a deeper dive shows why New Hampshire was in fact a great win for Cruz. First, Cruz...

My opinion is one on one Trump will crush Cruz.

One on one Cruz crushes Trump.

Trump does not have the media covering for him the way it does for all Rats. If Trump has to move beyond generic phrases and begin to defend what he says he wants to do he gets into trouble. Look at how he is being shown to be a crony capitalist because of his eminent domain position. Look at how his healthcare comments have revealed his socialized healthcare thinking. Look at how his build a wall, but have touchback amnesty reveals his liberal view on immigration. Right now he gets away with it because people are so angry they don't care.

However, in a one on one race all those issues begin to be examined and talked about.

If Trump were to win the nomination this is a big part of the reason he won't win the general election.

I’d vote for anyone over Hillary. I support the process and will vote for the GOP nominee. Although I prefer Trump, I’d vote for Cruz. I hope the Cruz supporters will do the same.

I agree with most of what you said though I still thinks he wins the nomination. The General, I don’t see it. Though I think he has a better shot than Cruz. My Senator has a lot of relationship mending to do. And I know many do not think so, but I know so.

I would vote for Trump over Hitlery and Sanders, who are both Marxists like Obama. But I would have to hold my nose to do it.

I won't.

I held my nose and voted for McCain and then Romney, never again. I think Trump is even worse because if elected all the rino's will fall in line as he gives the Rats one victory after another packing the courts with liberals, giving illegals citizenship, expanding govt, socializing healthcare. But the "deal maker" will give up just enough to the Rats to have all these things come true.

If the people in the “Bible Belt” are so easily seduced by the flim-flam of an Elmer Gantry school toss-off like Cruz, this nation truly is screwed and deserves the schlonging it gets.

I agree with you on the general. Trump has the highest negatives (60%) of any presidential candidate in the history of polling for negatives!

We need this to come down to Trump versus Cruz.

Bush needs to be knocked out.

I think a Trump/Cruz ticket might be a winner in Nov. Trump would never go for a Cruz/Trump ticket.

I think Bush’s strategy has to be to outlast all the other GOPe candidates and then unite the GOPe vote. That will probably be between 30-40%. I hope not, but it might be a winner in a close or brokered convention.

But either Hillary or Bernie would eat Jeb! for breakfast.

The GOPe is already running anti-Trump ads this morning. Anyone who thinks Jeb and Rubio are dead is fooling themselves. The next few weeks are going to be bloody.

I would vote for Trump, but I think many won’t. Trump should have thought of that before calling a much loved and genuinely conservative candidate a liar, a cheater, a dirty trickster, unlikeable, inelgible, a Washington insider, and the list goes on.

Like I said, I will vote for Trump if I have to because I know the stakes, but the sour taste Trump has left in the mouths of Ted Cruz’s supporters will cause many will stay home should (God forbid) he get the nomination.

I used to get some long dark green watermelons from Water Valley Mississippi that would weigh 60-70#s each. I had a friend with a convenience store that kept his cooler just above freezing and we would keep them there for 5 or 6 days, these were the sweetest, juiciest, best watermelons I’ve ever had. As soon as you started cutting one they would start cracking and seemed to guide the knife.

Excellent analysis of a Trump Presidency. Then the GOP-e will proclaim victory for re-establishing “conservative” values.

Trump’s touch back amnesty is so much better. Senator Cruz is a Conservative and any conflicts like you mention pale to Trump’s and his record but besides all that I am fearful of a Trump Presidency or from anyone with mental issues.
Compared to obama Trump is an extreme narcissists. The symptoms the Donald exhibits? Excessive use of superlatives instead of factual information, lack of empathy exhibited by mocking the afflicted and childish name calling. Not to mention his vindictiveness and rages. A narcissist will surround himself with two kinds of people those who pump him up and those he can put down. Trump should not be making Supreme Court or any other appointments, taking those 3am phone calls or have his finger any where near the button. Why dont’t you go to www.cruz.org and read about Cruz’s stand on TPA and HB1.

I still have hope that the people who are blinded by Cruz’s tactics will wake up to the fact that his twin “Brother Cruz” only appears when it’s convenient.
