This is what I am thinking. The Chart was created to mock the argument that the Southern States were paying the lions share of the Tariffs that ran the US Government.
It made me realize that New York was collecting tariffs for money earned by Southern Exports.
Couple that with the fact that all the coastal packet shipping was ran out of New England, and you start to see the financial cost to them of Southern Independence.
It made me realize the war was about the loss of New England money, and the propaganda to justify it was about "slavery."
The monied titans of New England couldn't afford to allow Charleston to take half or more of that money pile from imports/exports.
So true. That, coupled with the fact that Northern textile mills and shipping would be worth little without cotton, made the war a necessity for the North.
