SAN DIEGO -- A 25-year-old University of San Diego graduate who had recently moved to Chicago for a new job was killed by a stray bullet last week.

According to WLS-TV, Aaren O’Connor was sitting in her car in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood Friday night speaking on the phone with her sister in San Diego when the line went dead. When her father called O’Connor back, he said she sounded confused.

"She was incoherent, didn't know where she was, and kept saying that her head hurts. Her head hurts," David O’Connor told ABC7. "I wish I could have known what was going on, so I could have told her that I love her one more time."

Aaren’s death was one of 17 Chicago homicides in the first eight days of February, ABC7 reports.

Toughest gun laws don’t seem to work. Sad for this family.

Should declare ChiRaq a war zone along with several other cities that for some reason never get mentioned.

She wasn’t black, so I guess her life doesn’t matter. So sad. So pretty.

Who writes these headlines? It’s as bad as: “Throw mother from the train as kiss.”

I hate the Ghetto Culture, it kills and destroys, nothing great can come from it. I wish these folks would get rid of it and the thugs and merge into mainstream America, yeah they would be in a sense “white bread” but you know what, white bread is better than being dead, RIP.

Man, that is one stray bullet.

Haha! That was my first thought. Helluva stray bullet to get to SD from Chicago.

The story says she was sitting in her car in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood. Does anyone know the area? Is this a risky neighborhood — other than being in Chicago, that is.

It always amazes me that there always seem to be more deaths from “stray bullets” than from targeted fire. It’s almost as if they bounce off the intended targets and then go on to hit innocent bystanders. Or maybe the bystanders aren’t so innocent.

I’m a Chicago native, born and bred, and I had never in my life heard of a “Heart of Chicago” neighborhood, so I had to look it up.

Turn out it is a “rebranding” someone is attempting of the infamous “Humboldt Park” neighborhood, a hotbed of Latino gang warfare. They’ve been trying to “gentrify” that neighborhood for about three decades now, but it is still not a place you want to be after dark.

Should declare ChiRaq a war zone...

This story is so sad, so tragic. And it certainly will get worse, if for no other reason than the Dem's have a lock on the city.

Back in the Roaring 20's, there were calls to deploy the Illinois National Guard to Chicago, to stamp out Al Capone and the other gangsters. The Guard, of course, was never used, but that plan might have worked. Just clamp the city down, tight.

But no way would that work today. You'd eventually end up with either dead Guardsmen or Kent State type shootings. I guess there is no solution except to stay out of Chicago.

They should replace the “welcome to Chicago” sign with, “ abandon hope all ye who enter here”
