What kept us safe during the Cold War was that the Soviets knew we would retaliate in kind to a nuclear attack and that they could never locate and destroy all of our ICBM missile subs in any preemptive strike. The threat of mutual assured destruction kept any uneasy peace. However today we have potential nuclear armed enemies who are led by nut jobs (North Korea) or Islamic fanatics (Iran) who are not deterred by fear of our nuclear arsenal and who are increasingly convinced that a President like Obama would never use our nuclear weaponseven if they attacked us.
