In the 1960’s, my dad owned a small farm where I-40 was coming through NC. The state enforced eminent domain and they purchased the land from my dad at fair market value. There is nothing new with eminent domain, it has been around forever.

Except of course in your example it was for a public purpose, not a private one, a big difference.

That was eminent domain for public use. Noone has a problem with that. Trump wanted his cronies in government to use eminent domain to seize property and then sell it back to him so he could develop it. That is using eminent domain for private gain and is the height of crony capitalism.

And what did the state do with the land?

In the late 1800s, NYC wanted to build a bridge.

My great great grandparents owned a house and property where the beginning ( or end, depending on which way one is going ) would be best placed. They were offered and took a VERY good price and every time I see or am on that bridge, I feel that it is MINE and am very proud to have an historical edifice to remind me of my family's place in NYC's history.
