Miami (AFP) - As glaciers melt due to climate change, the increasingly hot and parched Earth is absorbing some of that water inland, slowing sea level rise, NASA experts said Thursday.
Satellite measurements over the past decade show for the first time that the Earth's continents have soaked up and stored an extra 3.2 trillion tons of water in soils, lakes and underground aquifers, the experts said in a study in the journal Science.
This has temporarily slowed the rate of sea level rise by about 20 percent, it said.
"We always assumed that people's increased reliance on groundwater for irrigation and consumption was resulting in a net transfer of water from the land to the ocean," said lead author J.T. Reager of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
"What we didn't realize until now is that over the past decade, changes in the global water cycle more than offset the losses that occurred from groundwater pumping, causing the land to act like a sponge -- at least temporarily."
The global water cycle involves the flow of moisture, from the evaporation over the oceans to the fall of precipitation, to runoff and rivers that lead back into the ocean..........

To the contrary, they have succeeded in totality if my understanding of Bastiat’s premises as to the expected results which indicate the perversion of the law is correct. The only question is whether or not we have advanced to the stage of universal plunder from that of partial plunder. In either a fall is predicted.
Just wait until global warming kills all the sponges in the ocean and they release all that water. You ain’t seen nothing yet. ;-)
The oceans aren’t going anywhere. It’s in the BOOK. That’s the way it will be.
Psalm 74:17
You have divided all the lands and seas and nations of the earth. You have made summer and winter.
so now, if we leave our water taps running while we brush our teeth, it’s a good thing?

Thank you for posting the working link. I try to always check them but forget sometimes.
It’s called PER-CO-LA-TION.
NASA “expert” = compromised loser. These “scientists” are an insult to science and truth. They worship two things: their “research” grants and their paychecks.
Something is “brilliant” to people that “don’t know it.” A lot of “brilliance” going around today. In the “bugs” case, I worked for a division if the comoany that sold them. We used them in the oil patch for spill cleanup for YEARS. Also the dispersants that got all the neg publicity? That was to break up the oil creating more surface area for the bugs to attack. But we heard screams about dumping the chemicals (which are a basic ingredient in Dove soap) in to the pristine ocean...”killing the fish.” Politicians and environmentalists FEED off of the ignorance of the populace. And there is plenty of food thanks to our education system.
Remember decades ago when the enviroweenies urged everyone to put a brick in their toilets to save water?
Well, now’s the time to remove those bricks to make room for glacial melt.
Problem solved (see, I can do math just like the wackos).
There’s not that big of a belief in global warming. If there were people would be voting based on it, and they’re not. They’d also be changing various behaviors and habits, and they’re not.
People vote, now and as they always have, on economic and securtity issues.
What you have is an authoritarian scientific community and a small minority of true believers so browbeating people over Global Warming “denial” that people claim to believe in it in a variation of the Bradley Effect. While still pumping gas into their SUVs, cranking up the AC in Summer, etc.
It was always about squeezing the biggest fine possible out of BP and they succeeded.....despite the fact that there is a fund for these accidents. No company wants this to happen.
They don’t teach cycles any more , they just want to look at small parts and be experts.

“Thereâs not that big of a belief in global warming. If there were people would be voting based on it, and theyâre not”
I suppose it is a matter of who one knows - I don’t care much what some poll says. All the lefties I know think its a big deal and would never dream of voting for someone who did not support climate change legislation/regulation. The LIVs just do what everyone else does.
The ‘small community’ you mention includes the US Forest Service/Dept of the Interior, the EPA, the NEA, NOAA, NASA, and many elected represenatives - voting does not matter, it matters who counts the votes - Jughashvilli.
0bama asked NASA to boost the mooselimb self image, world wide.
NASA plan is to reveal themselves as idiots, so everyone looks smart in comparison
From the article: “We always assumed that...
Seems “science?” concerning global warming, or climate change, or climate interruption, or whatever, has a lot of assumptions.
That’s a large part of the problem when you don’t use the scientific method.
Rising sea levels were promised over a decade ago by the Goregon (aka:ManBearPig)... so there has to be a CYA “theory” to explain why they’re not rising. Or maybe we see another example of 1 Corinthians 1:25?
Justawunderin’. (Why is so much “science” these days just speculation?)
I thought the “science” was done? Are they saying, “not really”?
Either it is complete and we can stop paying for these scientists or it isn’t and we’re allowed to question it. Which is it?
I’ve seen articles claiming the sea level has risen IN FLORIDA! One family member asked some friends down there if it was “really bad”!! ugh...you need to be completely devoid of science to believe this crap. People STILL believe the polar bears are dying, the guy that came up with that was found guilty of scientific fraud (on the topic).
It’s the people pointing the finger and saying “denier” that have no clue.
Let’s see...one Corinthians...
Sorry, that one has legs at my house.
