Among the two candidates whose results look at all like those of an eventual GOP presidential nominee, polling suggests that Ted Cruz would do significantly better than Donald Trump in the general election. According to the Real Clear Politics average of recent polls, Cruz would fare 5 points better versus Hillary Clinton than Trump would.

Polling has consistently shown Cruz to have an advantage over Trump in this regard: Fox News found that Cruz would fare 4 points better than Trump, beating Clinton by 7 points (50 to 43 percent) to Trump's 3 (47 to 44 percent). NBC News and the Wall Street Journal found that Cruz would fare 6 points better than Trump, losing to Clinton by 4 points (49 to 45 percent) to Trump's 10 (51 to 41 percent). And Quinnipiac found that Cruz would fare 5 points better than Trump, tying Clinton (at 45 percent apiece) while Trump would lose by 5 points (46 to 41 percent).

In all, RCP's average finds that Cruz would beat Clinton by 1 point (47 to 46 percent), while Trump would lose by 4 points (47 to 43 percent)...

It’s not true that Cruz can only get a quarter of the Republican vote. Cruz can unite the right in the general. Trump cannot.

Trump has much higher negatives than Cruz.

The MSM is holding back until the general election. If Trump is the nominee-They will have a ton of material to use against him.

Ted Cruz would mop the debate floor with Clinton. A fact not reflected in this poll.

Debates don't win elections. Ask Al Gore.

He can't even beat Trump

Apparently the Cruz folks adhere to the new transitive property of common core mathematics

If A (Hillary) < B (Cruz) ... in general election
and B (Cruz) < C (Trump) ... NOW
then A (Hillary) > C (Trump) ... in general election

You choose ignorance, then. Sad.

What do you think is fueling Trump? HUGE numbers of voters have just HAD IT with open borders and trade deals.

Ugh... The 'right' in the general. So, we go from 15% to 20% for Cruz, tops. Trump gets 35% of the Latino vote and 20% of the black vote, along with a huge portion of the independent vote. For the umpteenth time, note that Trump got the majority of every demographic in NH. Cruz got exactly what he got in IA.

Of course you will not believe it because Cruz is your guy, but the head to head poll, at this point in time, is utterly and completely meaningless.

It’s the religious fan base that will glum onto anything, regardless of sanity, that keeps Cruz’s hopes alive. Once South Carolina smacks Cruz then reality will set in for some, but not all.

Awesome.
I can’t wait until we lock in on a candidate and start wrecking Democrats.

The idea of listening to those two braying voices - one nasal twang, the other horrible mid western squawk - would make me sit out the election.

Good old Rove pushing this ignorant tripe to his tame media stoodges today.

At this point in 2004 Bush was 12 points behind Kerry. Don’t remember Rove busy around TV in 2004 pushing the nonsense that Bush had to drop out to “Save the GOP Congress”

Nope just pointing out the childish idiocy of trying to use polling 9 months before an election to predict “winners”.

No, CNN lied about what happened in Iowa, and Donald Trump repeated that lie for his own personal gain:

No matter how many ways Cruz and his followers try to spin that story, CNN never said Carson was ending his campaign. It was the Cruz campaign that took it to that next step through innuendo and worse, then informed voters at the caucus sites that they should move their support to Cruz.

Doesn’t matter—gotta look state by state as the Electoral College is where the race is run and won!

Absurd poll. I would estimate less than 20% of Americans have any idea who Ted Cruz is, let alone what his positions are on any issue.

Both of winch are polling margin of error differences so meaningless noise

My in-laws are from the U.P. of Michigan.
Spending a day with them is like watching the movie Fargo
seven times in a row.

For a time they lived in Alabama where all of their neighbors had that growly Hillbilly Bear accent.

I know what you mean.

States states states. Virginia, Michigan, Ohio. In the general election Trump has a good shot at these states.
