Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has said that he intends to retake "the whole country" from rebel forces. In a rare interview, he told AFP news agency that defeating the groups ranged against him could take some time due to the involvement of regional powers.
World powers have agreed to push for a cessation of hostilities in a week's time.
The UN says it hopes to start delivering aid to some besieged areas in Syria within the next 24 hours.
Mr Assad expressed support for peace talks but said negotiations did not mean "we stop fighting terrorism". US State Department spokesman Mark Toner said Mr Assad was "deluded" if he thought there was a military solution to the conflict.
More than 250,000 people have been killed and some 11 million displaced in almost five years of fighting in Syria.
Some Syrian cities have been cut off from humanitarian aid for more than a year because of fighting. About 13.5 million people are in need of aid, the UN says.

as long as he kills all the ISIS punks, I can live with that.
so basically, Obama is dropping aid to ISIS?
wow
Assad doesn’t mind if the terrorists stop shooting back, but he is going to keep killing them. I approve. Barack can write a letter complaining about it.
Aid in the disguise of weapons, food, ammo etc.
Is this Kerry's idea of a cease fire: wait until Assad has reclaimed all Syria and then there will be no more firing?
There are no good guys in Syria.
Assad (and his supporters) are pretty bad too - but compared to ISIS, the choice is easy.
But he does face a long-term problem. He’s an Alawaite - as are most of his supporters. They are a minority group in Syria.
What is he gonna do when the Russians leave? I suspect that the radical Islamists would again try and topple his government
I still don’t get it.
ISIS is starting to not breath, why let up ?
ISIS is gunna abide by a cease fire ?
I don’t think the Russians will leave, if he succeeds it will be due to their assistance. They will have considerable leverage.
I talked to a Syrian, on an airplane, going to Mexico City. He truly had me convinced that the real root in the trouble in Syria is between Sunnis and between Shites. He says Assad is Shite, about 15% of the population of Syria, and 80% of the Syrians are Sunnis, and want Assad off the throne, he says it has gone on for 1400 years.
“”as long as he kills all the ISIS punks, I can live with that.””
Glad your reply was 2nd as I was getting ready to say the same thing - ISIS bodies spread as far as the eye can see and who is going to complain? Throw in some of the people from the obozo administration who interfered in that country to begin with!!! Not naming names, mind you!!!!
ISIS & Raqqa are now in the US sphere per ‘ceasefire’ agreement between the US & Russia.
Which means they will remain protected per 0bama & Kerry.
Was not a ceasefire - show title - was division of Syria between US & Russia.
well crap.
My recollection of history says the Assad regime never was a threat to the US or probably not Israel. So really, what harm is done by this guy staying in power, especially if he and his Ruskie buddies are destroying ISIS?
But if he does fall, I would be most happy to take his wife in as a refugee.

How’s that ceasefire working out for you?
Taqqyia - Assad is Alawite - a separate form of Islam which is closer to Shiia than Sunni.
Sorry to burst the bubble ...
“”He says Assad is Shite””
He’s Alawite - a form of islam (I guess) and it’s always been said that he had no problem with Christians and did not discriminate or persecute them in Syria. A reason for obozo and company to go after him - they went after anyone who was minding their own business in their own country.
I wonder if there is anyone in the world who would be willing to come to this country to - never mind!!!!!
