In a corner of Bob Jones University, the evangelical institution where presidential candidates have long gathered to highlight their faith, Senator Ted Cruz stared into the cameras to answer the question that had almost certainly never been posed inside these halls.
What was up with that porn star in your attack ad?
"It happened that one of the actresses," Mr. Cruz told reporters coyly, "had a more colorful film history than we were aware."
The remarks came a day after Mr. Cruz's campaign pulled an ad knocking Senator Marco Rubio for his shifting positions on immigration. It had featured a mock support group for disappointed voters, with one woman calling Mr. Rubio nothing more than a "pretty face." That woman, as Buzzfeed reported on Thursday, has appeared in several soft-core pornographic films.

The ex pornography actress actually does support Cruz.
I don’t believe that is “the chatter” at Bob Jones University or anywhere else, except in news rooms trying to find a gotcha question for Cruz. It’s a trivial bit of nonsense. I’d worry a lot more if a candidate said, “we can’t use her, I’ve seen her in a lot of porn movies!”
Note: I’ve seen her in Star Trek once or twice.
I think I watched maybe 3 whole episodes of Voyager.

A bit surprised and saddened no one at Bob Jones asked about her present lifestyle.
And Ted has surely had enough time to research her present actions to see if invoking John 8:7 would be in order .
Too bad the NYT doesn’t spend its time on Mrs. Clinton’s emails rather than this error by team Cruz.
People who need to fill space in columns like to chatter and wring their hands about this kind of thing. Normal people will laugh about it and otherwise pay it no mind. Candidates pay big bucks for opposition research on their opponents and those op guys have to produce. Sometimes what they come up with is lame, sometimes its colorful, and sometimes it could decide the issue. But usually its just lame or colorful.

I was surprised that he cancelled the ad. We’re all sinners in some shape or form and that would have been my response to critics.
But...he was a holographic image created by a Medical Emergency program.
This is a preview of the angle all the coverage of Cruz will take if he’s nominated. “Christian fundamentalist is a hypocrite.”
How can Cruz hit back? Trump, assuming he made a dumb ad like this, would tell the critics to grow up and laugh it off. No one expects a man of the world like Trump to pass a purity test.
But in the subculture where Cruz is popular that doesn’t fly. The Cruz supporters are seriously offended that Melania Trump posed naked for a magazine cover, though she was carefully covered so it was PG rated at most.
So when a stupid story like this comes out what can they say? That’s the puritan problem. In the modern world, where puritanism is a distant memory, there’s no way to interact with the broader culture without being “polluted” by it.
With thousands of people involved in a campaign some of them will fail the puritan test and the press will be there to document it. If Cruz laughs it off he’ll lose the schoolmarms that are his base. If he apologizes he loses everyone else.
That’s why holier than thou tactics are a fail.
