Cruz’s misleading attack that Trump ‘convinced’ the gov to ‘bulldoze’ a widow’s home

"Trump bankrolled politicians to steamroll the little guy, a pattern of sleaze stretching back decades. Worse? Trump still supports eminent domain today."

Who knew such a wonky topic would find its way into political attacks in the Republican presidential race? An ad released this week by Ted Cruz's presidential campaign lodged a renewed attack on Donald Trump's support for eminent domain and alleged use of the government's powers for private gain, to bully an elderly woman out of her home.

There are two problematic aspects of this ad: the misleading headlines that accompany the narration and the cherry-picked footage of Trump's answers that misrepresent the context of his statements. We took a look at these two elements, the context of the ad and the actual sources of the quotes and footage the ad used.

The Facts

The case

In 1994, the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, a government agency, attempted to seize an elderly widow's home. The agency tried to invoke "eminent domain," which refers to the government's right to acquire private property for public use.

The house was located near the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City. The agency wanted to turn the house and two other properties over to the Trump Organization. Trump had planned to landscape the area and build a new parking lot, with a waiting area for limousines.

The woman, Vera Coking, was in her 70s and had lived in her home for 37 years. She refused to give it up. Then, a four-year court battle ensued.

Princeton, Harvard Law, clerked for SCOTUS? I’d hire him in a heartbeat.

Was she? I just answered the poster you’re replying to and questioned why she didn’t use this outfit. They worked to call off the dogs in Long Branch, New Jersey as well. Good group.

Lots of lies and distortions floating around this story.

“He’s out of control with the dirty tricks and lying. I truly do not get it.”

Cruz sees that he is not getting traction. His internals are probably telling him its over and he’s desperate to try to make something happen.

She had a private attorney BEFORE and DURING her court fight who was joined by the Institute for Justice. I just read that the other day. It even told how she picked one from Philadelphia who was licensed in New Jersey to make sure he had no ties to Atlantic City.

Well, did she ever express regret at the fact that she did not sell when she did? If not, she’s probably the smart one.

“I’m waiting for him to start jumping up on stage at rock concerts across the country, and them claim that they were really Ted Cruz Rallies.”

That is what Obama did.

Like I have said, it doesn’t matter what he says and does, the Trumpbots are for him! Cruz is going to do both of those things you mentioned. So many of these guys are just like the Perot supporters of 92 and 96. Doesn’t matter what he says or does, they are still for him! Tell me, what would it take for you decide not to support Trump?

“she could have sold for between $1-$ Million but held out and eventually it sold at auction for $530k to Carl Icahn.”

Yeah. She saw deep pockets with Trump, so the greedy ol’ biddy kept asking for more. HE WALKED AWAY. (Art Of The Deal: “Be prepared to walk away.”) I’ll bet her family was thrilled that she screwed with their inheritance.

Jeb Bush took a house, which including 160 acres from a Navy vet in Florida. The vet didn’t want to sell, he was made to sell by Bush, using Eminent Domain. A park stands where his property used to be. He had lived there for 40 years. Texas Stadium was built over private property seized from the owners. The Bushes are part owners of Texas Stadium and Jebbie Bush and his old man and brother made a fortune by stealing land to have their investment built.Eminent Domain is what it’s called. When creepy Cruz starts running his mouth at Trump about Eminent Domain, Trump should look right at Jebbie and tell him to ask Jebbie why he seized the vet’s property and why he thought it was right to use ED to make himself millions off Texas Stadium.

Maybe her home was priceless to her. I can’t believe how many people are acting like this woman is an idiot for fighting to keep her property and telling the rich man to shove his money.

Did Trump try to get the lady’s house bulldozed through the use of eminent domain or not?

If you hire someone to break into your neighbor’s house and steal her necklace but the person gets caught before he breaks in, it would still be accurate to report that you hired someone to steal her necklace.

Pointing to the fact that your neigbor still has her necklace wouldn’t make the report a lie.

No that is not what the article says.
Trump was not a party in the court case.

From the article:
“ In 1994, the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, a government agency, attempted to seize an elderly widow’s home. The agency tried to invoke “eminent domain,” which refers to the government’s right to acquire private property for public use.”

Cruz is fighting one election at a time, which is his only hope for victory. The problem with that is you can easily get type-casted, as Cruz has now, given all of the prayer-breakfasts and related events. It may have won him Iowa, it may help him in SC, but it didn’t help in NH and it likely won’t help much outside the south overall.

...and it DEFINITELY will hurt him in a general election.

Whether the Compost is biased against Cruz over Trump is irrelevant to this case. I personally believe they hate anyone who is a Republican, period.

Are the facts listed in the Article untrue? If so, tell everyone where the Article is wrong. The Redevelopment Agency is the deciding factor here,
not Trump. He was just the guy ponying up the Cash to try and buy the Property.

I’m a Cruz guy and I don’t care for Falsehoods being sold as fact from anyone. Jeb is trying the same tactic saying the poor old Woman was kicked out her Tenement by the Evil Trump guy, a complete LIE.

_________________________________________________________

Excuse me Trump and the Gambling redevelopment Agency sent her a notice she was to be evicted, the fact that she had to fight the order for 4 years and won has nothing to do with the ad, the ad is exactly correct.

The Compost chose to read intent not that the ad was factually wrong but they felt that since trump lost that you could see the ad as misleading.

The FACT is that Trump is an enthusiastic supporter of KELO an infringement that all thinking conservatives had Condemned for Year prior to Trump’s miraculous conversion to conservatism.

I am amazed by the obtuseness of Trump supporters on this issue.

“However, it admits the truth that Trump spent 4 years in court attempting to steal the woman’s home, but was unsuccessful. His position is clear. If a rich guy wants your property, it’s OK and right for the government to take it from you and give to the rich guy.”

And not only that, he DID convince a government entity — the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority — to strong arm the widow on his behalf.

No, he didn’t. He lost the case and couldn’t bulldoze the home unless he was clinically insane. He offered her good money for the house (2 million) which she refused to take. End of story.

I mean, if we were the follow your logic, it could read “Did Trump try to get the lady’s house burned to the ground, sown with salt and had all her pets cremated or not?” It. Didn’t. Happen.
