Why not?
I'd prefer they stick with the "no, we're going to leave this up to the next President." But if not, the next best move is simply to slow down the process. Give him hearings, but delay and don't schedule a vote until after the election.
If a Democrat wins, then might as well confirm the guy because he has a chance of being less left-wing that someone else. But if a Republican wins, bury the nomination and wait for a Republican nominee.
Waiting for the election is almost a best-case scenario.
