Following death of Supreme Court Justice Scalia, here's President Obama's short list for replacement

After the sudden death of conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, President Obama has the opportunity to move the country’s highest court toward the left by tapping a more liberal-leaning successor.

Immediately after news of Scalia's death broke, diverse options for the top job were being floated along with a debate online among Senate leaders about whether lame duck Obama should be the one to nominate the next justice.

"The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court justice," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Saturday in a statement.

"Therefore this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president.”

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) quickly fired back saying that "it would be unprecedented in recent history for the Supreme Court to go a year with a vacant seat."

"Failing to fill this vacancy would be a shameful abdication of one of the Senate's most essential Constitutional responsibilities."

Legal experts think Republicans might block an Obama appointee until he's out of office, leaving the court with a gaping vacant seat for nearly a year.

"I think Republicans will make every effort to block the nomination," Stephen Wermiel, Professor of Law at American University Washington College of Law told the Daily News. "Even to the point of shedding blood in the aisles of the Senate if they have to."

His nominee will be black. The democrats have to motivate that constituency this November in order to win, and Hillary isn’t getting the job done.

Holder had the baggage of Waco and Elian and the Clinton’s last minute pardons and Holder was still approved as Attorney General.

You have missed the most obvious answer to your own question....

Barack Obama will nominate himself for all the right reasons:

1. he protects his “legacy” for all time

2. it is a gig that allows him to lecture the rest of us for the next 30 years

3. he receives a fat paycheck in perpetuity for essentially doing no work

Judge Wopner still alive? How about Judge Joe Green? Surely Judge Ito could fill that seat. Perhaps if we could find Judge Joseph Force Carter he’d be a shoo-in. And last but not least, how could anyone overlook Joe Pyne for this spot? Oh, the memories we make.

Don’t be surprised if whomever the rat king puts forward slides on in there with no real attempt to block by the GOP RINO controlled senate.

Congress can change the number of justices on the Supreme Court without a Constitutional amendment. They did it several times in the 1800’s. Maybe it’s time they at least doubled the Court to 18. With more members, it wouldn’t be so dependent on one member to tip it this way or that.

If the quisling GOPe truly gave a damn about this country and the American People, the House would convene tomorrow and pass a veto proof bill REDUCING the USSC to 8 justices, or 7 if you wish as soon as there is another vacancy, and send to to the Senate!

The libs have nothing to fear. Republicans are spineless and will cave with hardly a whimper.

Do you mean to tell us that odumbo stopped his golf game long enough to generate a “short list” for Scalia’s replacement? Hopefully, he wasted his time and that McConnell will NOT bring the nomination to the floor of the senate for a vote. Delay, delay, delay!!!!!

Obama has no legacy. He needs one and another Supreme Court Justice - which will tip the balance on the Court until and unless a Republican President starts picking Justices - very likely 1 or 2 in the next term.

We know he has no respect for the Constitution. We know everything is political. We know he will use Executive Action, even when he knows it will be overturned. Therefore:

I think he will make a Supreme Court recess appointment before February 22nd. Even if it is only good for a year.

There are some big cases coming up specifically about Presidential power. He will dare the Senate to do anything about it. With McConnell, that is a pretty good gamble.

It is risky, but it is unlikely that McConnell will allow a real vote on a nominee in the ordinary course of business. Being a political hammer for Obama (nominating someone for political gain) doesn’t matter anymore. He will say the GOP already said that they would not confirm his pick, so he had no choice but to appoint the 9th Justice since it is soooo important to have 9.

Until a candidate comes up that looks really good, then the Republicans just need to continue to delay the nomination. The last thing we need is another Obama pick. He has a way of picking the worst of the worst.

True, but being the AG for a limited time frame and a lifetime SCOTUS judgeship are way different animals...

It’s ok to be a partisan hack as a AG for a term, but to be one until you die as a SCOTUS judge has far more reaching ramifications...
