SAS sniper takes Daesh commander's head off while giving beheading lessons

A British SAS sniper took an Islamic State (Isis) commander's head clean off as he taught jihadi recruits how to behead captives, according to reports. The marksman fired from over a kilometre away (1,000 metres) to land the shot.

The IS (Daesh) fighter was reported to be in the middle of a drill teaching new soldiers how to execute captives, according to the Daily Express. Some 20 new terror recruits were watching as the fatal bullet struck.

The soldier was operating in the northern Syria a fortnight ago and was using a .338 rifle with tumbling ammo that can cause a huge hole in the body on impact. The sniper had assistance from 12 fellow SAS soldiers, who managed to sneak into a jihadi compound before the shot was fired.

One military insider said: "One minute he was standing there and the next his head had exploded. The commander remained standing upright for a couple of seconds before collapsing and that's when panic set in. We later heard most of the recruits deserted. We got rid of 21 terrorists with one bullet."

I think the tumbling refers to the bullet path only after hitting a ballistic target (the body mass). In air, it spins cleanly and evenly from the rifling in the barrel. Don't know exactly what would exaggerate tumbling after impact - maybe a hollow spot behind the nose.

The Rigby is a dangerous-game cartridge, not a sniper round. Looks like it was shown for size comparison only (and of course, the much larger .50 BMG is used in sniper work).

“Cheers, mate.
Here’s hoping he doesn’t get charged with failing to shout a warning before popping that balloon.”

If that had been one of the US military....he wouldn’t have been ALLOWED to take the shot..our guys can only shoot if they are fired upon first. LORD, please save us from the idiots in Washington, DC.

Yeah, they don’t know what they are talking about.

They made up the “decapitated” part, and then invented a tumbling bullet to help the decapitation story.

He was shot in the head with .338 Lapua round.

Not the time to lose one's head.
No.
That's not the way to get ahead in life.
No.
It's a shame he wasn't more headstrong.
Hmm.
He'll never be the head of a major corporation.
Okay, that'll do.
Okay.

Even assuming .5 MOA accuracy over that distance,a head shot would be a matter of luck.

Many rounds will destabilize and tumble when transitioning from air to liquid medium. If it tumbled before striking a target, it would not be issued to a sniper.

BTW, rounds known for tumbling frequently don’t and round that aren’t known for tumbling, may, depending on how and what they strike.

Terminal effects are a crap shoot, just get the rounds on target with enough energy and hope for the best.

It’s possible the shot hit a little low striking the neck, not sure if the round would still have enough energy to completely sever the head at 1000 yards but is would certainly loosen thing a bit.

I’ve seen a guy who appeared to have a severed head but when we moved the body, it was still attached, it was just hanging behind him.
