GREENVILLE, S.C. - Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said what's at stake in the battle over the Supreme Court and what could be at stake in the presidential election is the Bill of Rights.
"Our very bill of rights hangs in the balance," Cruz told about 5,000 people gathered for the Conservative Convention two days ahead of the South Carolina primary. "We are one vote away from a radical 5-4 majority."
Cruz was speaking about the vacancy on the court left after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. With a 4-4 split between liberals and conservatives, an appointee by President Barack Obama would tilt the court left for decades.
Trailing Donald Trump in the polls, Cruz asserted that he was the only candidate who could be trusted to nominate strict constructionist justices to the bench.
"Scalia was a lion of the law," Cruz said. "As Reagan was to the presidency, so Scalia was to the Supreme Court."
Cruz noted a series of 5-4 decisions in recent years that could easily be reversed.
These included upholding the federal ban on partial birth abortion, siding with gun rights advocates in two Second Amendment cases, and religious freedom rulings.
"We are one liberal justice away from the Supreme Court ordering abortion on demand up to delivery with taxpayer funding," Cruz asserted.
Cruz added, "We are one liberal justice away from court mandating that 10 Commandment monuments across the country be torn down."

Has he made any actual suggestions yet? Or is he still just insisting that he’s the only person capable of nominating good options for consideration, without providing any?
The Constitution hangs in the balance of a courtroom in Illinois and NY.
Ted Cruz wrote a very emphatic article supporting the nomination of John Roberts. Just sayin’.....
Well get your ass back to the senate and do something about it
You donât ever want a crisis to go to waste ...
The Bill of Rights is not in the balance.
If a President can refuse to execute laws passed by Congress, he can certainly refuse to enact rulings by the Supreme Court which infringe on Constitutional rights. The same with governors and legislatures.
The Constitution did not give the Supreme Court the authority to take away the rights of citizens delineated in the Constitution. Any federal or state official who has sworn loyalty to the Constitution is bound by oath to oppose tyranny whether it comes from the Supreme Court, Congress, or the President.
'S' stands for Scalia
Cruz actually gets it.
Of course Ted hasn’t made any suggestions.
But Trump has. He suggested his sister.
I see what you did there, and I like it!
This is just typical BS from Cruz. There is absolutely nothing to say that the Bill of Rights would be treated any differently by the SCOTUS. He just like to make up stuff.
The death of Scalia really has put a sobering effect on this election.
On CNN Ted talked about this. He talked about the cases he had defended at the Supreme Court ... vital cases some regarding rights of the unborn. He won those cases 5-4.
We just cannot trust the Blond Blowhard to nominate good people to the court. He’s not that informed and he’s not that trustworthy.
This is a little too serious to be flippant about.
Donald Trump named two conservative judges at the debate a week ago, neither of which were his sister. And I know Ted Cruz and a lot of his supporters are humorless Ned Flanders types, but not acknowledging an obvious joke Trump made in complementing his sister last year seems like truth-bending that Christ would not approve of.
Hope your Ted Cruz “Armor of God” Mudslinging Merit Badge arrives in the mail soon!
Enlighten me then... do we have universal abortion rights because of the Supreme Court.
Do we have nation wide right to gay marriage?
He says it was a joke, but it was the first person that came to his mind.
And Trump does not joke.
He is almost a humorless human being.

I heard a moose once bit his sister.
I nominate John Roberts....Oops...I guess he’s a justice already. Sorry
