As a loyal (at the time) Republican, I supported the Bush Doctrine and the war, but I remember a whole lot of conservatives who were dead set against it. So it wasn’t just liberal democrats. And lots more conservatives have spoken out against it since. Especially now that the entire region is in chaos. As the infamous saying goes, mistakes were made. Minds change.
The counter argument would be that the foreign policy of Barack Hussein Obama brought about the chaos in the region. Examples would be the support of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, serving as al Qaeda’s Air Force in Libya, the Iraq withdrawal, financing and arming the Jihadists in Syria while trying to duplicate Libya. I supported the War and to they extent mistakes were made we shouldn’t have embarked on nation building fro ‘democracy’ in Iraq.
Understood, Jim. But you know very well that Pat Buchanan never sounded like Medea Benjamin or Cindy Sheehan when it came to the Iraq war. Therein lies the big difference—tone and language.
You summed it up quite well.
Many supported it out of loyalty because Bush II was a pretenda-conservative Republican, knowing full well Saddam was keeping the region reasonably secure and that Iraq had little to no relationship to 9/11.
The Iraq war was a huuuuuuuuuuuuge mistake! So many of the nations finest young people died, disabled or emotionally scared for life. What worsens this tragedy is obama just giving the place away.
Dick Cheney should go back and crawl under whatever rock he’s calling his home since 2008. The Bush administration’s actions in Iraq were indefensible no matter how much he tries to spin it today. If this wasn’t the case, then the Democrats never would have won control of Congress in 2006, his boss wouldn’t have left office with a 25% approval rating, and Jeb Bush wouldn’t be polling in the single digits today.
