Marco Rubio Laughs off Donald Trump Appearing to Question His Eligibility to Run for President

After a second place finish in South Carolina's Republican primary, Marco Rubio laughed off a suggestion by Donald Trump that the Florida senator may not be eligible to run for president.

"I'm gonna spend zero time on his interpretation of the Constitution with regards to eligibility and I'm gonna spend all my time talking about what this campaign should be about," Rubio said Sunday on ABC's "This Week."

On Saturday Trump retweeted a Twitter user's claim that Rubio is ineligible to be president. When asked about the retweet, Trump said in a separate interview on "This Week" he had never looked into Rubio's eligibility and was only starting a dialogue.

"This is a pattern, this is a game he plays," said Rubio. "He says something that's edgy and outrageous, and then the media flocks and covers that and then no one else can get any coverage on anything else."

Rubio argued that Trump was able to dominate media coverage while there were still 15 people running for the nomination, but as the race narrows, "that's not gonna work anymore."

"We need to remember that over 70 percent of Republicans nationally have basically said, 'We're not voting for Donald Trump,'" he said.

Rubio also knocked Trump for not exhibiting much knowledge of foreign policy.

"To say, 'I'm just gonna surround myself with really smart people,' you know, that's not enough," Rubio said. "You yourself have to make judgments, you have to understand these things."

Rubio added the world would not wait until the new president "catches up" before it starts testing the United States.

“At the time the constitution was written most native Americans were not considered citizens at all let alone “natural born” and eligible to be president.”

Furthermore, blacks were not even considered fully humans.

Sorry we do NOT have to “ASSUME” anything. Educate yourself and read the constitution then go to Vattel for the definition which everyone knew at the time the Framers wrote the constitution. NO OTHER ALLEGIANCE POSSIBLE.
Obama clouded the waters and Trump tried to call him out on it, but records were sealed. The Republican Party, by allowing the candidates Cruz and Rubio to run for the presidency have not don their job of vetting. But then of course, it is becoming evident it was part of the design!

The 14th Amendment cannot make a natural born citizen.

Has Rubio ever held Cuban citizenship as a result of the workings of Cuban citizenship law? If he has, then there is doubt. If he hasn’t, it’s a question that can be settled since he would be under the sole jurisdiction of the United States, and I assume there are no other nations making a citizenship claim upon him. It all comes down to jurisdiction.

“Until and unless courts issue a definitive ruling on what “natural born citizen” means within the context of the presidency, we have to assume that these guys are eligible to run for president.”

It has always been the tradition, as I was taught in school, before this was ever an issue, that natural born citizenship meant the parents had to be citizens.

You have it backwards; you have to assume that they are NOT eligible. Just common sense would dictate that Rubio is a joke as far as eligibility is concerned.

The Naturalization Act of 1790, much quoted, VERY CLEARLY defines natural born as one being born of citizen parents. And, that citizenship descends from the father. This pertains to what the writers of the Constitution had in mind when they inserted the natural born clause into the Constitution. Subsequent naturalization acts do not have the power to amend the Constitution.

It is absurd to think that two Cuban citizen parents in Florida could bequeath natural born United States citizenship status to their child born in Florida. Or, that a Cuban citizen father in Canada could bequeath natural born United States citizenship status to his child born in Canada.

If the offspring are citizens, they are naturalized and therefore not natural born.

Marco is throwing in the towel after his Senate term is over. He will probably go to Wall Street or become a lobbyist to make lots of money.

He must know that he could never win again.

I don’t think that most of his followers are aware of that fact.

I agree with Rubio. The question of his eligibility is a non-starter, and no way, no how, are lots of conservatives going to be caught dead voting for Mitt Romney with a louder mouth.

Pretty straightforward and easy to understand presentation about Cruz and Rubio’s eligibility to run for POTUS.

“At the time the constitution was written most native Americans were not considered citizens at all let alone “natural born” and eligible to be president.”

You could not be more wrong.

Before the Constitution was written, they were citizens of the various states, and until after the Civil War, citizenship descended through a state.

Yours (thought you expressed doubt): “So we’re saying that both parents have to be American citizens, in addition to being born on American soil? If that’s the definition, then Obama is ineligible to be president,,,”

That’s correct. (Obama’s daddy was a Kenyan/UK, not an American citizen...)

The problem is that a lot of Republicans , especially east of the Mississippl, actually support amnesty. Most of the immigrants that they are familiar with are legal and they feel sorry for the ones who are not.

They are angry with Ted Cruz for the poison pill amendment that forced Rubio to vote against his own bill.

Barry Soetoro/Barack Hussein Obama should be proof enough of the wisdom of the founders when they tried to prevent him from being President by requiring someone who could only be a US citizen and nothing else.
Born here of citizen parents.
Naturally a US citizen because there is no other possibility.
One cannot be anything else and also be a natural born citizen.

Obama told us he was born a British Subject.

Who believes Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Jay, Monroe, Madison, etc. would have found him to be a natural born citizen?

I was amazed to learn that about blacks when I went to citizenship class. When they were allowed to vote way back, ten blacks had to get together and agree on things, as the ten cumulatively could only cast one vote.
