Putin pulled off a brilliant piece of diplomacy and pretty much said he backed Kurdistan. The Syrian Kurds then switched over to Russia's side and opened an office in Moscow - sort of a future embassy.
The Russians twisted Assad's arm in accepting this because the Kurds would straddle the Turkish-Syrian border and serve as a buffer state and cut off the Turkish pipeline to the Syrian rebels.
I noticed that the UK Daily Mail published an article on 2/20/2016 discussing that EU countries had warned Turkey that if hostilities with Russia escalated into an armed conflict,, they should not depend on NATO support.
Kurds are not ISIS so yes Putnam is protecting the Kurds.

Not credible, did not Merkel just the other day call for a no fly zone over Syria. A no fly zone only helps Turkey and hurts Russia.

But if you saw the full interview, the interviewer was laughing at the Saudi which in itself was funny. The same Saudis, who are getting their collective butts kicked in Yemen, and doing the Iraqi Army Maneuver with its expensive weapons ...
We were supposed to be helping the Kurds but it was all talk.
Turkey & Saudi Arabia should realize that Syria is a sovereign nation ruled by an elected president. Any attack on that country by foreign powers is an invasion that can be legitimately defended against by that nation & its allies - Russia, BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY.
Unlike Iraq & Afghanistan, there is no broad coalition of countries, backed by the UN Security Council, with authorization to invade & subjugate Syria.
Turkey’s proposed actions against Syria are probably illegal & don’t measure up to the requirements of NATO to trigger that alliances treaty. Obama will certainly not back Turkey’s aggression, nor will the EU, both too cowardly to act.
He may or may not be a loon, but even loons can be right sometimes. Bear in mind that the Russians and Turks have been blood enemies for centuries. In the depths of their Slavic souls the Russians would love to open up a can of nuclear fire on a few Turkish divisions. And the Turks are very uncomfortable with Russians on their southeast border in a de facto alliance with the Kurds. Plus there is a precedent for the Russians to mention the “N” word. Warning off an aggressor with the threat of tactical nukes if their tripwire forces are attacked was and is US policy in Korea and Europe.

I don’t think Rusia will nuke Turkey itself. I do however believe they would wait for a sizable Turkish force to encroach in Syria and nuke the Turkish troops on Syrian land. That is a checkmate and a half.

Turkey and the Saudis were never going to invade Syria, in spite of their bluster.
If they do, that would leave a bad carbon footprint! LOL!
They would just love to have the excuse to use those same weapons to take and keep open the Bosporus, the sea of Marmara and the Dardanelles.
