Between 1525 and 1866, in the entire history of the slave trade to the New World, according to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database, 12.5 million Africans were shipped to the New World. 10.7 million survived the dreaded Middle Passage, disembarking in North America, the Caribbean and South America.

And how many of these 10.7 million Africans were shipped directly to North America? Only about 388,000. That's right: a tiny percentage.

My son did a report back in HS for AP History - “Why the Emancipation Act was Wrong.”

I learned a lot. It was pretty early on in our history when we could not import new slaves. So the masters kept care of the slaves they had, and of course healthy for “breeding” new slaves. I didn’t know that.

He had all sorts of other arguments that Emancipation limited the former slaves rights and opportunities, etc. They would have been free regardless the way things were shaping up with mechanical harvesters, etc.

He got an A!

One of the more amusing moments in modern politics took place on the floor of the House of Representatives in 1995, when Major Owens, an African-American Democrat from New York City, declared that 200 million Africans had perished crossing the Atlantic during the slave trade. Not that 200 million had crossed, mind you, but that 200 million had perished, implying that the overall number who had crossed had to have been a serious multiple of that number, because otherwise, of course, there would have been no profit in trading slaves.

Owens claimed he got the number from “very conservative estimates,” although he doesn’t cite the source. For the record, world population between 1600 and 1800 was less than 800 million. According to Owens, fully one fourth of them perished at the bottom of the Atlantic.

Who knew?

Prior to his election to Congress, Owens was a librarian, although, apparently, not a research librarian.
