Inside the Republican Party’s Desperate Mission to Stop Donald Trump
New York Times ^ | FEBRUARY 27, 2016 | ALEXANDER BURNS, MAGGIE HABERMAN and JONATHAN MARTIN

“There’s this desire, verging on panic, to consolidate the field,” said Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a former supporter of Mr. Bush. “But I don’t see any movement at all.”

Mr. Rubio’s advisers were also thwarted in their efforts to secure an endorsement from Mr. Romney, whom they lobbied strenuously after the Feb. 20 South Carolina primary.

Mr. Romney had been eager to tilt the race, and even called Mr. Christie after he ended his campaign to vent about Mr. Trump and say he must be stopped. On the night of the primary, Mr. Romney was close to endorsing Mr. Rubio himself, people familiar with his deliberations said.

Yet Mr. Romney pulled back, instead telling advisers that he would take on Mr. Trump directly.

After a Tuesday night dinner with former campaign aides, during which he expressed a sense of horror at the Republican race, Mr. Romney made a blunt demand Wednesday on Fox News: Mr. Trump must release his tax returns to prove he was not concealing a “bombshell” political vulnerability.

Mr. Trump responded only with casual derision, dismissing Mr. Romney on Twitter as “one of the dumbest and worst candidates in the history of Republican politics.”

-- Cruz is not part of the GOPe. --

I didn't say he was. I said he was in the same camp as the GOPe, in a specific fight. I also said that he benefits from the association with the party, in general. If he was not "in the party," he would not be in the Senate.

Yes, he did. And it was mentioned in the last couple of paragraphs of the article.

The governors meeting was on February 20th I believe; LePage didn't endorse until the 26th. And he didn't endorse until Christie did. Maybe he sees the handwriting on the wall? Or maybe LePage thinks his unpopularity will help take Trump down.

“Maybe he sees the handwriting on the wall?” or he is trying to get inside Trump’s campaign to figure out a way to sabotage it. I wonder how well Donald knows him?

As Vice-Chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) Cruz was in a position to act when McConnell pulled the trigger on the attacks against Ken Cuccinelli (Virginia governor race ’14), Chris McDaniel (Mississippi Senate), and Matt Bevin (Kentucky Senate), yet he stood by and did nothing. He didn’t resign the NSRC until Jan. 2015. Cruz may have regretted it but by going along with McConnell’s dirty tricks he made a defacto deal with the devil.

I did notice that Trump hasn't thanked LePage for his endorsement on twitter. Kinda odd, that.

Cruz is not part of the GOPe.

How do you know that he isn't just playing a role in their schemes? Maybe he's just there to throw some red meat to the conservatives to make them believe their concerns are being paid attention to, all while nothing really gets accomplished. The big money globalists can make good use of a politician who says all the right things, while still staying under the control of Goldman Sachs , et al. He'll campaign saying he'll get a border wall, and then do nothing about it once elected. Everybody wins. The open borders crowd still has the open borders, and the closed borders crowd is happy because they have someone they think is fighting for them in the Senate. As long as they know the numbers in Congress aren't there to actually get a wall built, the globalists are thrilled to allow there to be an ineffective voice shouting in opposition to it.

More on LePage - Trump - Bush: LePage endorses Donald Trump for president - Portland Press Herald

... LePage didn't say if he was considering endorsing Bush, but [Boston-area radio talk show host Howie] Carr repeatedly pointed out that the Bush family had supported him, with Barbara Bush filming an ad for LePage late in the 2014 election.

Read the article, lots of juicy stuff, including LePage suggesting that he would run for US Senate if Trump is president.

There is a Bush family - LePage connection. Also, Christie was an opponent in the presidential race, so having him “flip over” is a much bigger deal, carries more publicity (not necessarily all good!) by far.

I don’t believe that for one second. Cruz is a good Christian man and a brilliant man. He is a true conservative. He’s not the type that would sell out is values to the establishment.

Cruz is not part of the establishment. In fact, the establishment really dislike him.

Again, I like Cruz but I just don’t believe he can be elected (at least not this cycle).

Ted Cruz is a line jumper inside the NWO club. That is the only difference.

Not only does the hammer meet the nail, it drives it all the way in with a single stroke.

Curz supported McDaniel.

Matt Bevin made more than enough mistakes in the campaign to make it difficult to stand with him. I believe he is a good man and I much preferred him to Mitch but there were just too many mistakes. My guess is that Cruz has regretted not helping Bevin more since.

I really don’t recall much about the VA governor’s race.

This is why we’re mad. GOPe clowns like McLame run as a conservative but forget all about us after the votes come in.

It’s past time we send the GOPe the message about how mad we are.

Call this "servant of the people" remind him who he works for....If you are voting for Trump tell him....if you aren't let him know that also, but to refrain from such tyrannical methods.

In the NYT article, there is not a single mention of what the voters want. It’s all about saving the establishment. As usual, Rove is helping to guide the failing strategy.

I’m, getting sick of the headline from Fox and others: “How Can Trump be Stopped?”

I had forgotten about the Bush/Maine connection, since the current crop is either Texas or Florida.

Yep, LePage’s endorsement is smelling more like GOPe set-up.
