Because, no matter your opinion of the man personally (and I admit mine is somewhat mixed, myself), just by entering into this fight, when he had no personal need to, he demonstrates that whatever else you may think of him, he is an American at heart, not some wishy-washy 'global citizen'...

They’re not using reverse psychology. They’re just cornered rats, scared s***less. They are terrified of not Trump (many liked him before) but his positions and the massive support he has.
They are terrified of losing their chokehold on power, and the fact that many of them will face indictment under a Trump administration. The R and D uniparty.
