There will be no open convention. If a candidate doesn’t have enough delegates, that will be known long before the convention opens. The convention rules committee would then propose appropriate changes (subject to whole convention approval) to assure a first ballot winner.

I think the primaries will settle it, but on the chance that no candidate wins the majority of delegates, it would be quite explosive in this year's context for the rules committee to manufacture a winner. The only way to make this work without blowing up the party would be for most or all of the candidates to agree. Which might happen. That would make for some interesting horse-trading.

The logistical issues of an open convention would indeed be formidable. But modern conventions have been turned into overblown circuses anyhow. (I've staffed two of them.)

I don't know what a modern open convention would look like, and it would be daunting to improvise one on the fly. I suppose there might be some combination of an initial meeting followed, if necessary, by a standing committee of delegates from each state supported by daily online polling of those who went home, with perhaps a final all-attendees session to ratify the winner. It sounds clumsy, but that's because we so unused to the idea.

Do you know how long the open conventions used to run? People were travelling by train and most of the delegates weren't taking leave from 9-5 jobs, so time constraints were very different.

There have been conventions where the delegates are virtually locked in the hall and thirty to fifty ballots are held in the poor ventilation and cramped seating. People are human and want to find a way out of the impasse.

The 1924 Democrat convention went 104 ballots. The convention was deadlocked in part because they could not get the Klan’s influence stopped. Called the Klanbake buy some due to a parallel Klan rally, the Klan was able to stop its expulsion from hidden control of much of the party.

After the democrats had their nominee, they lost.

Convention rules committee changes have to be approved by the whole convention. The same voters who would determine the nominee anyway.

There were probably exceptions, but most conventions seem to have been over in four or five days regardless.

So what do we the masses out here do about this?

FR is a microcosm of solid conservatives as large. The fact that many of us, as DoughtyOne's caucus has shown, are split 64/35 Trump-Cruz on the average day, but out of that the majority can't be civil or speak reasonably due to the heat of competition shows how hard it is to work in unison until final votes decide.

Cruz “character”:

1. Phony summonses mailed out, scaring people to vote for Cruz.

2. Claiming Carson quit, presinc captains told voters “vote for Cruz”

3. Campaigning in the 800 churches, showing video “vote for me” with his preacher/father stomping for him. Rafael Cruz is a 7 Mountain Dominionist and believes his son is the anointed one.

4. “Brilliant” lawyer, did not know he was Canadian citizen and that he is not Natural Born Citizen, not eligible for office of P or VP.

5. Making phony video advertising with lies about opponents.

6. Phony video about Rubio - Obama.

7. 7 Mountain Dominionist Church = Christian???

Just enough to beat Trump in IA, apologize, rinse and repeat?
Liar is the polite term for this Cuban. His father was pro-communist in Cuba, imprisoned by Batista, but now he is refugee?

IRREFUTABLE AUTHORITY HAS SPOKEN

(Oct. 18, 2009) The Post & Email has in several articles mentioned that the Supreme Court of the United States has given the definition of what a “natural born citizen” is. Since being a natural born citizen is an objective qualification and requirement of office for the U.S. President (and VP), it is important for all U.S. Citizens to understand what this term means.

http://www.thepostemail.com/2009/10/18/4-supreme-court-cases-define-natural-born-citizen/

Applies to Cruz and Rubio, both at the time not born to US citizens and on US soil.

"You see some classes of the human family that are black, uncouth, uncomely, disagreeable and low in their habits, wild, and seemingly deprived of nearly all the blessings of the intelligence that is generally bestowed upon mankind.

The first man that committed the odious crime of killing one of his brethren will be cursed the longest of any one of the children of Adam. Cain slew his brother. Cain might have been killed, and that would have put a termination to that line of human beings.

This was not to be, and the Lord put a mark upon him, which is the flat nose and black skin. Trace mankind down to after the flood, and then another curse is pronounced upon the same race--that they should be the 'servant of servants', and they will be, until that curse is removed."

Brigham Young-President and second 'Prophet' of the Mormon Church, 1844-1877- Extract from Journal of Discourses.

Here are two examples from their 'other testament', the Book of Mormon.

2 Nephi 5: 21 'And he had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts against him, that they had become like unto a flint; wherefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people, the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them.'

Alma 3: 6 'And the skins of the Lamanites were dark, according to the mark which was set upon their fathers, which was a curse upon them because of their transgression and their rebellion against their brethren, who consisted of Nephi, Jacob and Joseph, and Sam, who were just and holy men.'

August 27, 1954 in an address at Brigham Young University (BYU), Mormon Elder, Mark E Peterson, in speaking to a convention of teachers of religion at the college level, said:

"The discussion on civil rights, especially over the last 20 years, has drawn some very sharp lines. It has blinded the thinking of some of our own people, I believe. They have allowed their political affiliations to color their thinking to some extent.I think I have read enough to give you an idea of what the Negro is after."

"He is not just seeking the opportunity of sitting down in a cafe where white people eat. He isn't just trying to ride on the same streetcar or the same Pullman car with white people. It isn't that he just desires to go to the same theater as the white people. From this, and other interviews I have read, it appears that the Negro seeks absorption with the white race. He will not be satisfied until he achieves it by intermarriage."

"That is his objective and we must face it. We must not allow our feelings to carry us away, nor must we feel so sorry for Negroes that we will open our arms and embrace them with everything we have. Remember the little statement that we used to say about sin, 'First we pity, then endure, then embrace'...."

(Rosa Parks would have probably told Petersen under which wheel of the bus he should go sit.)

1967, (then) Mormon President Ezra Taft Benson said,

"The Communist program for revolution in America has been in progress for many years and is far advanced. First of all, we must not place the blame upon Negroes. They are merely the unfortunate group that has been selected by professional Communist agitators to be used as the primary source of cannon fodder."

We are told that on June 8, 1978, it was 'revealed' to the then president, Spencer Kimball, that people of color could now gain entry into the priesthood.

According to the church, Kimball spent many long hours petitioning God, begging him to give worthy black people the priesthood. God finally relented.

Sometime before the 'revelation' came to chief 'Prophet' Spencer Kimball in June 1978, General Authority, Bruce R McConkie had said:

"The Blacks are denied the Priesthood; under no circumstances can they hold this delegation of authority from the Almighty.

The Negroes are not equal with other races where the receipt of certain blessings are concerned, particularly the priesthood and the temple blessings that flow there from, but this inequality is not of man's origin, it is the Lord's doings."

(Mormon Doctrine, pp. 526-527).

When Mormon 'Apostle' Mark E Petersen spoke on 'Race Problems- As they affect the Church' at the BYU campus in 1954, the following was also said:

"...if the negro accepts the gospel with real, sincere faith, and is really converted, to give him the blessings of baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost, he can and will enter the celestial kingdom. He will go there as a servant, but he will get celestial glory."

When Mormon 'Prophet' and second President of the Church, Brigham Young, spoke in 1863 the following was also said:

"Shall I tell you the law of God in regard to the African race? If the white man who belongs to the chosen seed mixes his blood with the seed of Cain, the penalty, under the law of God is death on the spot. This will always be so."

(Journal of Discourses, Vo. 10, p. 110)

Yeah; Native Americans are althroughout the Book of MORMON; too.

“I saw a striking contrast in the progress of the Indian people today ... they are fast becoming a white and delightsome people.... For years they have been growing delightsome, and they are now becoming white and delightsome, as they were promised.... The children in the home placement program in Utah are often lighter than their brothers and sisters in the hogans on the reservation.

At one meeting a father and mother and their sixteen-year-old daughter were present, the little member girl-sixteen-sitting between the dark father and mother, and it was evident she was several shades lighter than her parents—on the same reservation, in the same hogan, subject to the same sun and wind and weather.... These young members of the Church are changing to whiteness and to delightsomeness.

One white elder jokingly said that he and his companion were donating blood regularly to the hospital in the hope that the process might be accelerated.

(Improvement Era, December 1960, pp.922-23). (p. 209)

Polls show Cruz defeating the shrew and Trump losing to her. Cruz would decimate her in a debate with intellectual superiority.

Well!

This clichés it for ME!!

I was a hardcore Cruz backer until I actually got to know him. Now I see him for what he really is - a lawyer.

I didn’t expect him to vote to give Obama more power twice when I voted for him in 2012. The Corker Bill and TPA cloture votes made me start looking at him closer. I don’t like much of what I see. I don’t see me voting for him in 2018 if he runs for Senate again.

Polls much closer to the election than we are now showed Romney beating Obama in 2012. How did that President Romney thing work out?

Polls show Cruz defeating the shrew

Polls in the beginning of March are meaningless regarding an election nine months down the road...

Cruz/Rubes are lowlife race-baiters and should be disavowed by every Christian and well meaning person. If you have any morals, any hint of humanity left you should turn your back on them. I wonder what Trump will say at the debate. I hope he has some classic response rather than just stating that he did disavow Duke. He needs to shred CRuz/Rubes on this.
_______________________

Lagmeister, you win for one of the most unreal posts of March 2016. You say that Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio are low-life race-baiter and should be disavowed by Christians.

If you’re going to use the tagline of a Christian, you might do some thinking. It is not Cruz or Rubio that calls Planned Parenthood, the killer of millions of unborn children and an abortion mill of Nazi proportions, for doing wonderful work. In my understanding, the Bible says woe to those who call evil good. Mr. Trump has been doing that.

It is Mr. Trump who claims to be a strong Christian and claims to read the Bible more than anyone on Earth. Where are his fruits? Does a follower of Jesus dump two wives for mistresses? Does a follower of Jesus commit serial adulterer? Does a follower of Jesus own a strip club that takes advantage of women? Does a follower of Jesus take money from poor people through casino gambling and enrich himself?

Donald Trump has much to answer for, Mr. Lagmeister, and I’d suggest you examine your support for someone of such low character before you call out Cruz or Rubio supporters. You shame and embarrass yourself.

Chicago, 1968 anybody??

..was telling my wife about that convention last night. She was too young to remember.

A brokered convention with LBJ using every strong arm tactic in the world to get Humphrey the nomination--while riots were going on in Grant Park and on Michigan Avenue...
