This, you might think to yourself, is, finally, the moment when the establishment -- such as it is -- stands up to Trump, screaming "enough" at the top of its lungs and, in so doing, bringing the party back from the brink of an total electoral disaster.
You would be, almost certainly, totally wrong. In fact, being attacked by Romney is more likely to cement Trump's hold on the nomination than loosen his grip on it. Here's why.
Romney is the face of the establishment. He's just the sort of guy the party loves -- a measured statesman who views running for office as a civic duty. He's "serious." He has "gravitas." He is "trustworthy" and "steady."
He's also the embodiment of everything Trump has built his entire campaign against. Romney is too cautious, too mannerly, not tough enough for Trump's taste. He's the face of a Republican Party that lost twice to Barack Obama. He's part of the problem, not the solution.

Yep, we’ve been hearing for months that Trump is not a real conservative. And now the real conservative from Massachusetts will come to lecture us all.
Romney is the bookend to Geo. HW Bush, bracketing the period in which the GOP squandered the Reagan Revolution in favor of playing along with the progressive project to fundamentally change America from a Republic of free citizens to an agricultural combine where the people are kept as docile stock to be harvested for votes.
Should push Trump above 50%.
Really, why is Romney getting involved? Can he/they not see that he was a big part of why the republicans lost in 2012?
They just don’t get it, do they. It’s the establishment that’s the problem. The go along to get along RINOs. The great promisors that don’t deliver. The compromisers. The spineless. The GOPe, of which Romney is a member.
Even Chrizz Sizzlean gets it.
Romney unleashes scolding blast at Trump, who begs, “Oh, beat me, beat me, Mitt!”
I had forgotten about Romney’s aristocratic tone deafness. And that of the GOPe in general. Did Prince Rebus request this favor of His Mittness?
It is not that they do not get it. It is called DENIAL!
The GOPe and Romney still do not get it.
Maybe they will read this post and it will finally sink in:
WE ARE MAD AS HELL AND WE’RE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!
This is going to be two-edged, emboldening both factions. It escalates the uncertainty.
You are so right. He disenfranchised his own voter base, let Candy and other moderators OWN HIM. Never counterpunched Obama, it was maddening to see at the time.
But now, the loser goes on the attack against a Republican while Hillary the criminal smiles on the sidelines..
I don’t think we will hear Romney attacking Trump for flip-flopping on abortion, this was a guy who proclaimed he was to the left of Ted Kennedy on the issue when he ran against Teddy for senator.
Correct!...The more they bash Trump, the more they get the middle finger in their face!
[Even a dedicated lib like Cilizza can see this.
Only the stupid desperate GOPe cant.]
That is so shocking, it is worth repeating. The GOPe is totally blind, deaf and dumb. It is hard giving up monolithic power. Wait til Ryan and McConnell buy a clue.
No, they know exactly how stupid they look. They’re just willing to do it to keep illegal labor flowing.
If Trump actually paid Mitt to do this, my admittedly low opinion of each would go up significantly.
These are the new Cruz talking points, that Trump put Mitt up to trashing him and praising Cruz to prop him up.
Rep. Louie Gohmert just said it on Fox Business News. Said it’s the lowest thing Trump’s ever done to get Romney to trash him.
I think this is Cruz trying to shake off the establishment stigma but crazy times. I can’t see Trump risking something like that, too many other ways to go. And Mitt is 100% establishment.
Trump has said he WILL NOT BUY MILITARY equipment we don't need that's overpriced and obsolete.
Military ‘contractors’ the same people who donate big bucks to Lindsey Graham and John McCain who are running the show against Trump. That's where the money is coming from...
Romney, being a double negative, is a plus for Trump.
Classic of the establish. We the citizens don’t count of our vote. He knows better than the people!!!
