If Cruz’s people hired an illegal, shame on them.
At the same time, every employer in the USA, from a family needing a maid to a big farm, shouldn’t have to be an immigration agent. Employers are not police & shouldn’t be. It is in the employer’s best interest to check on potential employers, but the extent of the checking is limited by the employer’s ability to do so.
It is the Federal government’s responsibility to secure our borders & deport immigration law violators. That is the most rational way to deal with the problem as well as the most cost effective.
Our illegal immigration problem stems from 40+ years of Presidents who refused to enforce our EXISTING immigration laws, not employers whose only motivation is getting someone competent to do the job available.
