Trump Hits a Wall Within the GOP; His Critics Back a Convention Fight (POLL)
ABC News ^ | Gary Langer

Posted on 03/08/2016 9:10:05 AM PST by reaganaut1

Donald Trump’s facing a wall within his party, with Republicans who don’t currently support him far more apt to prefer Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio in a two-way race -- or even to favor a contested convention to block Trump’s nomination.

Trump continues to lead in a new ABC News/Washington Post poll, with 34 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning Independents who are registered to vote saying they’d like to see him win the nomination. But he trails both Cruz and Rubio one-on-one. And preferences for Cruz, Rubio and John Kasich have grown as others have left the race, while Trump’s support has essentially remained unchanged for months.

In the current multi-candidate race, 25 percent say they’d like to see Cruz win the nomination, with 18 percent for Rubio and 13 percent for Kasich; those are +4, +7 and +11 points compared with January, respectively, to new highs for each. Trump, by contrast, peaked at 38 percent in December. (In a difference from previous matchups, this poll asked respondents whom they’d like to see win, rather than whom they’d vote for, since the primaries are underway.)

In hypothetical two-way matchups, Cruz leads Trump by 54-41 percent and Rubio leads Trump by 51-45 percent in this poll, produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates. While the latter lead isn’t statistically significant, both are further signs of the apparent limits to Trump’s popularity within his party. Indeed, among non-Trump supporters, seven in 10 say they’d prefer Cruz, and as many say they’d pick Rubio, in head-to-head contests.

So think about this, don’t take this lightly...

Even being a nonentity typing on a keyboard, I don't take it lightly. I don't put the reeducation camp past that hag.

I'm trying to understand your post...

“So what you’re saying is that you’re running away because you are AFRAID of a FIGHT!
Trump is a FIGHTER. Cruz and Rubio are politicians. I want a wrecking ball to hit Washington’s NWO madness. Trump is the ONLY ONE who will FIGHT for AMERICANS!”

Usually caps help but in this case they were a little confusing. How am I afraid?, How am I running away?
If you want a fighter, please nominate Holyfield or Mike Tyson. Better yet, invite Terry Crews to the race. If you want a real estate guy, elect Trump. If you want a true conservative who has and will defend the constitution, elect Cruz.

If you want an UNCONSTITUTIONAL Candidate who is up to his neck in the NEW WORLD ORDER, vote for Cruz.
If you want someone who believes in the Constitution, America’s SOVEREIGNTY, and bringing back America’s lost stable economy, vote for Trump.
Trump is FOR AMERICANS. He is willing to fight the establishment for US.
Cruz is for the NEW WORLD ORDER and the loss of American Sovereignty.
The choice is very clear. If you can’t understand that, you shouldn’t vote.

I think your tagline reflects how you view this. Do you believe Trump to be some sort of messiah? I actually have been a Cruz supporter but then the other day thought it would be best to vote Trump in a caucus, but wasn’t able to do to a mix-up. But I’m not “anti-Trump.”

- Hillary/Dems can’t just do this without caring what the public thinks.

- They will get no public traction whatsoever .

- The public will reject the reasoning: that is, that with Cruz being born in Canada to one American parent, and living there until he was four and then spending the rest of his youth and life in the U.S., he is ineligible under the Constitution’s nebulous eligibility clause which seeks to weed out those whose loyalty to the U.S. should be automatically suspect.

- This is an era where many Americans live and work abroad and they won’t buy that doing so makes them or the people they know also doing so (and any children they may have while they’re there) suspect Americans, and so that the nebulous clause should be intrepreted that way.

- The vast majority of the public will want the matter decided by their votes, not the courts, and the Democrats know that. If this was some clear-cut breaking of the law then that would arouse passions, things would be very different, but this is a matter of Cruz’s eligibility having many defenders. I’ve discussed it before here, and while respecting the arguments otherwise about what it’s believed the Constitution writers meant in 1789, I still don’t believe that interpretation is better, all things considered, than the one that supports Cruz’s eligibility. At this point, there hasn’t been much public discussion about it, but if Cruz were to be the nominee and his eligibility was challenged, then there would be a massive public debate and I believe that Cruz would handily win that one, and should. And I believe the Dems know that.

- If it even starts to look likely that Cruz will win the nomination, then the eligibility question will quickly be put to Hillary. Far more independents and Democrats support Cruz’s eligibility than oppose it. Why would she attack him on that rather than on all the other things where she might have more success with far less risk?

To Quote Cruz to trump: Breath.

It’s good to be enthusiastic. To buy into all the campaign rhetoric is not healthy.

Cruz has fought, and Won, cases to protect the constitution. Trump has...? Oh yeah, he builds buildings well and fails at multiple minor businesses. Aslo, he donates to democrats who oppose pretty much everything he says he stands for.

Vote Cruz!

There are now two candidates in the race: Trump and Romney. Rubio and Cruz are working for Romney.

It's really Trump vs. To Be Announced. Romney is just a placeholder. Right now the GOPe is desperately seeking someone to foist on us that isn't already a universally despised failure.

Within the GOPe that's a bit of a challenge.

Your post #3 is most definitely a STRONG DOSE of the TRUTH.

I've always said that Trump was the ONLY candidate who was capable of dealing with, and wading into, the den of snakes and thieves.

The unhealthy thing both for the country and the voter is to cast one’s vote for an ineligible Canadian. Total disregard of the law of the land, the constitution is the hallmark of a greedy, lying, turncoat politician. You can sell out America’s sovereignty, but I WILL NOT!

Your argument won’t hold water. To argue that Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 is “nebulous’ is beyond the pale. To forth argue that the Constitution means nothing because Americans living abroad won’t stand for what it says makes me wonder just WHAT you hold allegiance to. It certainly isn’t the Constitution which is supposed to be the law of the land.
