Harmless? Marijuana-induced psychosis on the upswing
KIRO Radio ^ | 2/26/2016 | Josh Kerns

"Duane Stone is a veteran Seattle mental health specialist. He's seeing a surprising increase in patients experiencing psychotic episodes as well. Many have never had any mental health problems before.

"I get lots of first break kind where this person doesn't have an experience with mental illness, they don't have a diagnosis, they're 30 or 40-years-old. And the only thing they've been doing has been smoking marijuana for the last year or two," Stone said.

It's not just your stereotypical stoner. They're family people working at places such as Microsoft and Amazon."

Getting high alters the mind. Knew there would be mental health consequences to pot legalization.

I have an old Navy buddy going back nearly 40 years.

He visited me a couple of years ago and had some pot his son had given him, with WARNING. He offered me some but I declined as I remembered the last few times I smoked made me miserable.

He said eff it and rolled a joint.

Took one hit and put it down, waited for effect as he was warned to do.

Within 10mins he went out to his truck and crashed. I went out a couple of hours later to make sure he was OK, he was.

But he was shaken up and humbled.

That's ONE hit from a joint and it was tooo much.

The days of crumbling your weed to sort out seeds and stems on your vinyl album covers is long gone.

Oh, how gauche and provincial!...................I used an aluminum cookie sheet!......................

Exactly. In my day (old man-speak) it was a social thing, passing a joint around, catching a “buzz”, but still being able to function ... then suddenly it was too strong to even roll into a joint because that was too much. The social aspect was gone, and what was left was a ridiculous stoned effect that most people (aside from stoners) would not find appealing.

Propaganda. Anyone that believes this ignorant BS is too stupid to leave their home without supervision.

One of those skills which will evade our future generations.

I think spending four hours every Friday and Saturday night trying to find some bartender who would sell us a six pack of beer, spending hours cleaning our lousy weed and rolling joints, and buying needless items at a pharmacy far from home so you could covertly sneak in a pack of condoms, took up so much of our time that we rarely got in trouble being so cool.

Growing up today must be scary! No wonder kids won't leave social networking to actually go forth and conquer.

Friedman was right about that. It’s really a short cut to the understanding about EVERYTHING that’s wrong with the welfare state. Because once you can count on government support when things go wrong in your life, there’s no longer nearly as much pressure on you to see that things don’t go wrong.

Individual responsibility is the cornerstone of our civilization.

Everybody rolls pin joints these days, guess a blunt would cost $200 and bring down a horse.

We share the same experience. I would come home from work, and if I didn’t have a gig that night, smoke a joint and practice pedal steel for a couple hours. By the 90’s, I was smoking one or two tokes, and getting too nervous to even practice! One day I told myself, “Nervous and paranoid is not fun!.” and I never smoked again.

“A joint today is as close to heroin as possible. That’s why weed today works well on pain and has medical claims.”

I cannot even fathom weed being so strong that it would actually reduce physical pain. The paranoia and ‘psychedelic’ secondary properties to go along with the alleged pain relief would be overwhelming for many.

“If I can draw any parallels to today’s weed v. the 70’s, the difference is like an Aspirin versus a push of Demerol in the hospital.A joint today is as close to heroin as possible. That’s why weed today works well on pain and has medical claims. Weed in the 70’s offered no medical benefit for pain. “

Before I agree or disagree, I would want some science. I am somewhat interested in scientifically sound pain usage, for “medical marijuana,” with no additive chemicals whatsoever.

Look at the stoners you went to high school with to see the cause and effect. And that pot wasn’t nearly as strong as the past 10 years pot strains.

Nobody in my entire school smoked marijuana.

Ye, I'm that old.

"The paranoia and ‘psychedelic’ secondary properties to go along with the alleged pain relief would be overwhelming for many."

Absolutely. That's why you used to stay in the hospital for a week after surgery. Effective pain management requires medical supervision.

The end of admitted hospital stays in favor of cattle call outpatient factory style surgery with four hours of morphine and 5,000ml's of IV antibiotics in post surgery recovery, followed by a script for five days worth of Lortabs is not appropriate or responsible medical care.

I would argue that most abuse of prescription pain meds is a result of changes in hospital practices.

The kids are all into the wax and oils now which are extremely potent. But even the super strains will knock you out.

Since I502 passed I have lit up about 4-5 times due to my lower back condition. and I’m only using the stuff that is labeled 17% THC. It only takes about 3-4 good hits on my little pipe and I’m ready to veg out.

I have prescription muscle relaxers and naproxen but I need to take them for a week (3 relaxers and 2 naproxen per day) whereas a quick smoke I feel like a new person the next day. My back went out on Monday but a I have a job interview tomorrow so no smoking anytime soon...
