Buddhist Monk, Apparently Mistaken as Muslim, Attacked in Hood River

Kozen Sampson, a Buddhist monk and co-founder of the Trout Lake Abbey retreat, said he was attacked Monday during a visit to Hood River.

He doesn't remember much, but says a man, who seemingly thought he was Muslim based on his clothing, attacked him for no reason.

"I pulled over, someone ran up and yelled. I turned around, they kicked the door, hit me in the side of the face and knocked my head into the frame of the car," Sampson said. "I do remember [him yelling] an F bomb [about] Muslims, and that was it."

But instead of anger and hatred towards that man, Sampson said he only feels forgiveness and compassion.

"I was thinking, 'That poor man.' Can you imagine living your life in fear and anger? Can you imagine wanting to do something that you had to hurt somebody?" Sampson said.

Now he's hoping the attack will be a wake up call for others, to come together and support our fellow man no matter what God they may worship.

"I don't know the Islamic faith well, but I do know that Muslims are our brothers and sisters and I would encourage everyone to just take a hard look at how supportive are you of all God's children," Sampson said.

His powerful message is already spreading -- a candlelight vigil to promote peace and tolerance will be held Friday night in Hood River. Organizers ask supporters to meet at 202 State Street starting at 6 p.m.

No beard. No headscarf? What was he wearing to make a person think he was a Muslim?

Sounds very generic.

A clean shaven bald man wearing a brown robe and beads screams Muslim, I guess.
It must fit the narrative the media wants to promote.

No, you don't know the Islamic faith well. But as a Buddhist monk, you took a vow of non-violence. Enabling murderers through social acceptance and denial breaks that vow. Watch your karma, Kozen.

Looks like he could increase his donations of brown rice and tofu to the local food bank, but only a meth head would think he’s muslim.

I live not far from Hood River, trust me, there are a ton of stupid hicks up there, and quite a large amount of trust fund yuppies as well.

Apparently, Kozen Sampson did not study at a Shaolin monastery.

So he's a Buddhist, huh?

"I don't know the Islamic faith well, but I do know that Muslims are our brothers and sisters and I would encourage everyone to just take a hard look at how supportive are you of all God's children," Sampson said.

Guess he hasn't heard of the 969 Movement--it's the Buddhist boycott of all Mooslim businesses.

“But as a Buddhist monk, you took a vow of non-violence.”

Actually, most Buddhist vow to avoid violence, but are quite comfortable using violence in defense of self and innocents. Some of the best martial artists I met in Japan were monks and priests, and the zen college I taught at was very known for its judo, aikido, yado and kendo courses.

Seem to me I recall a t.v. series in the 1970s about a bad-ass monk travelling across 19th-century America who regularly (every episode) opened a can of whoop-ass on some sorry hick who picked on him. Too bad this guy couldn't have dealt with the assailant here in a similar manner.

Regards,

Good point, but those martial arts are all used with the idea of redirecting violence back to the attacker, and never using the techniques to initiate violence. In that way, they are not considered violent acts.

Subtle points, but important. And in this case, this monk is redirecting the attackers violence upon those who would hold the attacker responsible for it, versus holding the attacker and the Muslim religion responsible for it. In that way, he is helping the spread of Muslim violence through the suppression of those who would fight it.

That the attacker, in this case, was an absolute idiot, doesn't change anything. Because what if the attacker was, or had a family member, harmed by Muslims? What if he was a vet who saw what Muslims do to non-believers? What if this monk wasn't hit by mistake, but because he's been protecting Muslim violence through his teachings? Coming from Oregon, the monk's liberalism probably comes before his Buddhism.

What is the difference between Kung fu and Judo?
(Ah grasshoppah, remembah ... it only joke)

One is an ancient art of self defense.
The other is what they make bagels out of...
