I hadn’t really planned to Canteen this weekend, but had it in the back of my mind that if I did, I’d pay tribute to Sir George Martin. He was a true giant, but that’s such a mammoth task and heavily into Beatles. After missing the Canteen Friday night I knew I couldn’t make it happen with any coherence. It’s been a busy day, but then the news about Keith broke Saturday morning and I felt I just had to say goodbye to one of the greatest artists of our time. Thanks for noticing FRiend.

George Martin and Keith Emerson was of the same.

Thanks for letting everyone share what they inspired.

George was the Father of the Beatles. Keith was the son that went his own way.

1955, American jazz saxophonist and composer Charlie Parker died of a heart attack in New York City while watching Tommy Dorsey’s Orchestra on television. He was 34. The coroner who performed his autopsy mistakenly estimated Parker’s 34-year-old body to be between 50 and 60 years of age. (After years of drug and alcohol abuse).

Worth Repeating

"And did those feet in ancient time" is a short poem by William Blake from the preface to his epic, Milton a Poem. Robert Bridges, the Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1913 to 1930, asked Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry in 1916 to set the poem to music, at a time when morale had begun to decline because of the high number of casualties in World War I and the perception that there was no end in sight. It has since become England's unofficial National Anthem. In 1973, for their Brain Salad Surgery album, Emerson, Lake & Palmer performed an adaptation of the hymn which features the debut of the prototype Moog Apollo, the first-ever polyphonic music synthesizer.

And did those feet in ancient time,
Walk upon England's mountains green:
And was the holy Lamb of God,
On England's pleasant pastures seen?

And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here,
Among these dark Satanic Mills?

Bring me my Bow of burning gold;
Bring me my Arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my Chariot of fire!

I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:
Till we have built Jerusalem,
In England's green & pleasant Land.

Jerusalem
