Connecticut revises jobs report for 2015, outlook troubling
The New Haven Register ^ | March 11, 2016 | Luther Turmelle

The state’s economic picture took on a completely different look Friday with the Connecticut Labor Department’s latest employment report.

Though the state economy added 900 jobs in January, its unemployment rate increased by one-tenth of a percentage point to 5.5 percent. But even more troubling than that were the Labor Department’s revised employment numbers for 2015: Connecticut only added 12,200 jobs last year instead of 26,900 that the state agency had originally reported.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said January’s new employment data and the revised employment numbers for 2015 are “emblematic of our new economic reality.”

....

“Connecticut’s economy is still growing, but not at anywhere near the growth rate of previous recoveries,” Klepper-Smith said. “Recession isn’t necessarily a foregone conclusion, but we’re starting to see cracks in our economic foundation.”

Of the 900 jobs that the state’s economy added in January, the largest growth came in the leisure and hospitality industry, which gained 2,000 new workers. But that gain was more than offset by January employment losses of 2,300 in the education and health services sector and 1,300 each from professional and business services sector as well as trade, transportation, and utilities.

The New Haven Labor Market Area lost 3,400 jobs in January.

Brian Flaherty, senior vice president of public policy of the Connecticut Business & Industry Association, said the January employment data “confirms the need for the state to change it way it does business.”

“Dan Malloy is the corrupt steward of crumbling state.”

You bet.

Bridgeport and New Haven are black holes for tax dollars. Danbury may be going that way as well, I don’t know.

They used to be worthy of being called the Constitution State. Even GE is leaving if I’m not mistaken.

GE is out. Malloy tried a powerpoint pitch on their brass with an image of a Pratt & Whitney jet engine. On the first screen, no less.
