You are right. The concern everywhere, however, is that they can just arbitrarily do whatever the heck they want.

IF they do that, they will sorely regret it.

Because tens of millions of Americans will not take such perfidy lying down.

It’s something they do every 4 years - review the rules and propose changes. Nothing new about it. And the delegates will have to approve of the changes.ue

So here is something to get your dander up - what if they propose these rule changes and Trump opposes them, but they get passed anyway with the support of a majority of Trump pledged delegates? Remember, the pledged delegates are only obligated to support Trump’s nomination, and even that only on the first ballot.

The concern everywhere, however, is that they can just arbitrarily do whatever the heck they want.

Only if they think they can get away with it. The GOPe wanted Jeb. They're not getting him. They wanted Rubio. He's almost gone. Their favored candidates having been roundly rejected by their voters they have to make a hard choice. Go to war with their base or make a deal. Trump is always willing to make a deal. Cruz, not so much. I predict a grand bargain where if Trump is close to locking it up the GOPe capitulates and does nothing to prevent his nomination. In return maybe they get to pick his VP, or maybe he just promises not to run an independent campaign and destroy the party.

They will not under any circumstances attempt to unbound the delegates for the first ballot. If Trump has a majority of bound delegates he's the nominee even if he makes no concessions to the GOPe.

The anti-Trumpers and cynics who think the GOPe can just hand the nomination to anyone they please aren't taking account of the Trump factor. He's rich, he's smart, he's ruthless and he holds a grudge. The GOP oligarchs do not want him as a permanant enemy. Especially not when, for the cost of a few concessions, he can win the presidency with a new Republican coalition of religious conservatives, anti-taxers and economic nationalists and keep the party in the game.

The GOP goes the way of the Whigs. And they know it, so it won't happen. The assumption is that they have everything to lose from a Trump presidency. That's nonsense. His voters will help other Republicans at every level. His presidency will provide plenty of jobs for GOP hacks. These guys aren't fanatical leftists who think Trump is Hitler. They're just opportunists. Trump can provide opportunity, and when it knocks they'll answer.

"Problem for Cruz is that most of the best states for him are already done. He has no chance in the Northeast for a majority in any of those states so his ONLY chance is New Mexico, Utah, Montana, or the Dakotas. Northwest states are also out."

Most polling I've seen indicates that if Rubio and Kasich leave the race, their voters prefer Cruz over Trump at about 3-1, so you're underestimating Cruz's chances.
