SENATE SHOULD HEAR NOMINEE
boblonsberry.com ^ | 03/17/16 | Bob Lonsberry

Hold the hearings.

Talk to the guy, ask him questions, give him his day in court.

And hold a vote. Up or down. Hold a vote.

I’m a conservative. I’m a Republican. I can’t stand Obama. I don’t trust the politicized Supreme Court.

But this bull crap out of Senate Republicans that they aren’t even going to talk to this new Supreme Court nominee is insane. Announcing, within hours of Antonin Scalia’s death, that the Senate would ignore a presidential nomination, was about the stupidest thing ever.

It disrespected the legacy and family of Mr. Scalia, by moving the subject from mourning to politics, and it gave Obama and the Democrats a perfect political opportunity.

Even if the decision was to stonewall the nomination and not move it before the election, what kind of idiot announces that publicly – immediately after the death of a man you should be honoring? If that’s what you’re going to do, don’t say so. Just do it. Let the spring wear on and the summer wear on and let the subject of the day be the presidential campaign instead of Republican stonewalling.

For years Obama has done nothing but vent his bigoted spleen at congressional Republicans. His hatred is palpable, and typically his criticisms are baseless. So why give the guy a valid reason to say you’re doing exactly what he’s always accused you of doing?

How stupid is that?

And how did we end up with Mitch McConnell being our leader in the Senate? I thought smart people got picked to be leaders, not idiots?

But Obama called our bluff. He made a nomination. And instead of some bomb-throwing extremist, he picked a guy establishment Republicans have been slobbering over for almost 20 years. He picked a middle-of-the-road old guy, as innocuous and unoffensive as they come, and he carted him out to cry for the cameras.

He loves America and his mom and his wife and he tears up when he says so.

He’s a white guy, he’s from the Midwest, he’s comfortably Jewish. He doesn’t offend anybody.

And now the Republicans in charge are going to make some stand about we’re not going to talk to him. They’ll point to Biden in this year and Kennedy in that year and they’ll get in some old-school pissing match that will make no sense to anybody with any sense at all. It’s as if they were looking for a way to further embarrass the Republican brand and this was the best thing they came up with.

And it’s idiotic.

Completely pointless.

Yes, the Supreme Court is important. Yes, traditional American liberty does hang on the tie-breaking vote of whoever gets on the court. But the Mitch McConnell wing of the psych ward my party has become is wrong to pick this fight.

People think it’s dumb, people are going to like the nominee, people are going to doubt Republicans.

And right now they’ve already got enough reasons to do that.

Obama has alienated the American people and possibly handicapped his party.

The actions of Senate Republicans to stonewall this nominee seem intended to show the American people that the Republican Party can’t be trusted as an alternative to the Democrats.

So welcome the nominee.

Have him swing by your offices, and pay his respects. Schedule some hearings for June. Take the summer off. Schedule some follow-up for October. Schedule a vote for November.

Begin the process. Give him his due. Offer some advice and consent.

And if the guy passes muster, confirm him. If he doesn’t, deny him.

But to throw a fit and hold your breath and say you won’t do anything just makes all of us Republicans look like idiots.

And we’ve got enough people doing that right now, thank you very much.

The president did his part. Now the Senate should do its.

No matter what year this is.

I happened to see Greta making a very similar argument last night as well. So there you have it in a nutshell.

Democrats do this kind of stuff all... day... long and no one gets their panties in a twist. Suddenly Republicans are up to bat and everybody, I mean even those on the home team, all start the angst ridden, hand wringing slobbering.

GROW UP!

When will we take the fight to these people? No, we always back away the moment someone raises the specter that we’re not being very nice. We should be more bi-partisan.

STOP!

So some guy nobody has ever heard of claims to be a conservative and thinks liberalism is some harmless ideology that deserves equal time and treatment. This guy is a clown.

I’m sorry to disagree, but that sort of nice calculating and trimming of the sails to avoid negative media comment is what got us here.

The best answer is the Biden Rule. The ‘Rats called the tune. Make them dance to it. It’s still possible for Republicans to earn some respect from a few voters, if they would just get a backbone.

Does anyone here think that if the roles were reversed the ‘Rats would give a ‘Pub-nominated candidate a fair hearing? Cripes, if they did they’d bork the hell out of him/her. Look what they tried to do to Clarence Thomas. The ‘Rats are well-versed in borking almost any ‘Pub nominee. Just ask John Tower. With that history, I see no reason why our side should grant any quarter to the ‘Rats. We don’t owe them any favors, we owe them payback. I’m tired of playing the gentleman while the other side kicks us in the nuts. We have the majority, let’s use it to our advantage for a change, while we have it. Just like the ‘Rats do when they have the majority.

It also bothers me that everyone on the court is currently Catholic or Jewish.

And this guy is also Jewish.

How it is possible in a country that is 46.5% protestant that we don’t have a SINGLE protestant on the court?

Loonsberry is quite the establishment loon who knows better than anyone else. His condescending demeanor demonstrates his absolute idiocy. I bet he was a hall monitor in 6th grade...and took infractions seriously.

Trump’s position is to wait so I’ll go with that. He apparently feels this position will be better for his administration when he becomes President.

Up yours Lonsberry, we’re sick and tired of both the House and the Senate playing these games with the Obamunist regime you claim not to like. It’s time for absolute and total obstructionism. If Obama sends even a request for toilet paper to the Congress, the answer should be “use your hand”.

Bull!

It’s time the GOP hold the Dem’s to the same standards they impose on us.

Biden, Reid, Kennedy, and Obama, have all opposed the idea of GOP nominees to the Court in the last year or more of their term.

Sir, stating that the Republican Senate led by McConnell should allow themselves to be manipulated by Obama and made fools of by Obama ONE MORE TIME on the most important question there is (left/right balance on the Supreme Court) facing this country suggests that you are, as the old song went “The World’s Biggest Fool” and they should “build you a statue” or you are a really a lefty and you are not telling the truth.

I swear, the GOP takes stupid pills. When Justice Scalia passed they should have kept their mouths shut instead of trying to act as if they had a pair.

Instead they handed Obama & dems the issue on a silver platter. Comments should have been limited to something along the lines of it is the responsibility of POTUS to nominate a replacement, once that happens they will take it from there.

I hate to tell McConnell and the rest of the Senate this, but no one gives a flying you-know-what about the Biden Rule or Obama may have filibustered a nominee in the past. For most LIV, it is about the present.

What is going to get the most press coverage? Obama accusing the GOP is playing politics by refusing to consider a “moderate” or Joe Biden did it too?

In the stupid world of the GOP, an empty seat on SCOTUS ( to be filled after the election) will help them keep the majority in the Senate.

Shut up Bob. The duty of the President is to nominate a candidate when a vacancy occurs but the Senate has no duty to hold hearings or vote on a candidate.

This guy sounds like a dubious cook. He puts a plate in front of you which looks ugly, smells horrific, and whose flavor is likely nauseating. And he says:

“It is called Surströmming, and some Swedish people think it is a delicious delicacy. You should try it. It’s homemade. I used Google Translate to sort of figure out its recipe and fermented it. G’won. What could it hurt? Don’t you like to try new things? It’s only fair.”

“”This nominee is bad, but it could be worse. Debatable whether that matters, but let’s presume for a second it does. I would suggest dragging the nomination out over the next 7 months, until the election. If Hillary or Bernie win, then accept the nomination, if a Republican wins, reject the nomination.””

I don’t think we have enough information to judge whether he would rule fairly or not - nothing so far, points to a bias... If they waited until AFTER the election and it goes to Hillary, we would then hear that there’s no time to get it done and it would be taken off the table - they take a lot of time off in November and December. Remember they do a lot of things in December that they had all year to do and didn’t.

I say seat him now on the chance that Hillary will get the chance to fill the seat after January 2017 and we’ll really be up the creek!

I called this one already: a moderate who hates the 2nd Amendment. Since that is the only thing the Dems care about, everything else could be even more conservative and the nominee would still be against guns.

PROOF: All the articles I read this morning omit that salient fact. In between condemning the obstructive Republicans, they talk about all the nominee’s sterling positions—except that one.

So since we are not going to give up 2A, this must be seen as solely an attempt to stir up animosity in an election year. Not having it, bozos. Go do your homework and dig up somebody else. Go ahead, waste your time and our tax money. We’re not buying.
