I am guessing you probably would. I have a bunch of dogs including a couple of German Shepherds. They are just for warning, I would not want them to get hurt.
Most people aren’t stupid enough to even TEST a Shepherd. Certainly not someone who intends criminal activity. They generally flee.
That is why dogs are so great, better than guns as “preventatives” because a) perps cannot see or hear a gun at all by itself and will still barge in, b) they don’t want to be “called out” as they want to be sneaky, c) the dog will likely not hesitate to “go off” and does not even have to go fetch a weapon (yes, even seconds count - you reaching for your pistol on the nightstand).
Common scum know this. They avoid dogs generally as noise-makers, and specific types they see as aggressive. If they can see your Shepherd in the window, so much the better!
