I’m Catholic. Please don’t bunch all of us into the same group. I know many Catholics that vote Republican.

The Catholic vote has always been complicated. Maryland was of course founded as a Catholic colony and Catholics have been scattered about since the earliest days, but as a major national political presence, the Catholic vote from the mid-nineteenth through the mid-twentieth century was predominately a big city, recent immigrant block, part of the Democratic urban ethnic coalition. That, of course, all began to change in the Reagan era, as assimilated Catholics were as appalled as many other traditional Democratic groups at the leftward, militantly secularist, and immoralist shift of the national Democratic Party.

To make a long story short, traditional Catholics of European descent, at least those who go to church, have been voting majority Republican for some time. But there is a huge, heavily Democratic Catholic vote from recent immigrants from Central and South America, who vote the gimmedat party line. The Catholics also have their modernist liberal wing, just like the Episcopalians, Methodists, Presbyterians, etc., who are leftists first and nominal Christians as an afterthought.

If you go to a non-Latino Catholic church and poll the people who are actually in the pews, you will probably find a majority of Republicans.
