Cruz supported dozens of amendments to the Gang of Eight. To take how the bill would stand after a single one of those amendments and portray that as what Cruz “pushed for” is beyond deceitful; it is an outright lie.
Cruz did say he want to pass immigration reform. He said his amendment to offer non-citizenship status to remaining illegal amnesty would make the then-current immigration reform package more likely to pass. Seeing ONLY the clips of his comments during the debate on the vote, one could reasonably infer that he would vote for the package if only that amendment passed.
But no Senator could have been misled, because they had all seen him push for all the other amendments.
