Fmr Presidential Adviser (Erlichman) Confesses: Nixon Invented Drug War to Decimate Hippies

President Richard Nixon launched the War on Drugs for one specific reason: to decimate his perceived political enemies—the anti-war left.

That's according to an anecdote in a lengthy cover story for Harper's, in which journalist Dan Baum recounts an interview he conducted with John Erlichman, a former Nixon staffer who was jailed for one year due to his involvement in the Watergate scandal. Unprompted, Erlichman confessed the true purpose of federal drug prohibition:

“You want to know what this was really all about?” he asked with the bluntness of a man who, after public disgrace and a stretch in federal prison, had little left to protect. “The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news.”

The dastardly plan failed only in the sense that Nixon ultimately lost—a victim of his criminal behavior and lack of scruples. But the War on Drugs certainlycost the nation outrageous sums of money, and expanded the scope of the federal government's oppressive power. This was not done for any noble public purpose—it was a political gambit, nothing more.

Marijuana Overdoses Kill 37 in Colorado On First Day of Legalization

Fri Jan 03, 2014

DAILY CURRANT – Colorado is reconsidering its decision to legalize recreational pot following the deaths of dozens due to marijuana overdoses.

According to a report in the Rocky Mountain News, 37 people were killed across the state on January 1st, the first day the drug became legal for all adults to purchase. Several more are clinging onto life in local emergency rooms and are not expected to survive.

“It’s complete chaos here,” says Dr. Jack Shepard, chief of surgery at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Denver, “I’ve put five college students in body bags since breakfast and more are arriving every minute."

“We are seeing cardiac arrests, hypospadias, acquired trimethylaminuria and multiple organ failures. By next week the death toll could go as high as 200, maybe 300. Someone needs to step in and stop this madness. My god, why did we legalize marijuana? What were we thinking?” "

Red herring.

Ever heard of "The Hippies"? They are currently running our country and ruining practically every aspect of our society. The sexual revolution/hippie/drug culture was generated in the US by the Soviet Union back in the 60s, as were the Black Panthers, the Women's movement, God is dead, Abbie Hoffman, Kill your parents, if it feels good do it...anything to break down the family and tear down the churches. Divide and conquer.

That "red herring" happened.

Look at my evidence. Meth is growing

Your link from post #70 says about meth, "Use data remains stable while treatment data increased slightly in 2012." (p. 45) And "growing", even if it were true, does not mean "rampant" - past-month use was at 0.2% of the population in 2014.

They're now blowing $40 billion of taxpayer money on it every year - how much more of a priority would you like to see it be?

Enough to keep it out.

What will that require?

Try factoring in the social costs, ok?

What are they?

What do you want, legalization? Yeah, that’ll work. A Nation full of addicts

There is no reason to expect "a nation full of addicts"; is their illegality YOUR only reason for not using drugs? And note that we don't have a nation full of addicts of the already-legal addictive drug alcohol.

keeping everybody stoned

Red herring. Even in states where it's legal, only a minority is stoned and it's their own choice that "keeps" them that way.

So you're claiming that everybody has been kept stoned? I'm not stoned - and on those long-ago occasions when I was, nobody had to "keep" me that way.

you're claiming that everybody has been kept stoned?

No. My initial comment debating yours (that the WOD is a statist program) was:

>> No, keeping everybody stoned, stupid and dependent is.<<

The RATs are doing their level best to maintain and expand "stoned, stupid and dependent" including "Everybody must get stoned"...just like Bob Dylan said.

We now have a serious heroin and prescription drug problem imported here to Maine...the same in New Hampshire. Maine and New Hampshire. Additionally, any school kid can get pot in a matter of minutes.

How did this happen...despite all the efforts by the administration to seal the borders in order to protect the public from crime, terrorists and contraband.....

Oh wait...

So the red herring hasn't happened but the Rats are pushing for it? That I have no argument with - but neither I nor any other pot smoker I knew had to be "pushed."

Additionally, any school kid can get pot in a matter of minutes.

That's been the case for decades.

Well, the communists took over in the 60s. That's decades isn't it?

Plots not required - just many kids' natural inclination to mess with their minds (cf. raiding their parents' liquor cabinets) and pot criminalization's having put it beyond the reach of effective regulation.

Plots not required

Well there were several and they worked. The communists won, even though Reagan destroyed the Soviets.

In case you hadn't noticed they now control the media, the public schools, the court systems, the university, most government bureaucracies. They have decimated the churches, military, and youth groups. They have divided men from women, blacks from whites, children from their parents, queers vegetarians and other whack jobs from normal people.

Did you think this was just an accident?

Well there were several and they worked.

More likely, as far as pot use is concerned, they were plotting to make the sun rise in the east.

The Soviets created or influenced these organizations as propaganda organs designte to destabilize American society and free Western culture in general.

Maybe you’d like to google some of these figments of my imagination:

Christian Peace Conference
International Federation of Resistance Fighters
International Institute for Peace
International Organization of Democratic Lawyers
International Organization of Journalists
International Union of Students
World Federation of Democratic Youth
World Federation of Scientific Workers
World Federation of Trade Unions
Women’s International Democratic Federation
World Peace Esperanto Movement.

But I doubt it.

It seems Soviet defector Stanislav Lunev stated in his memoirs that the Soviets funded virtually every anti-war movement in the US, and to the tune of about a billion dollars.

All of which has squat to do with whether these organizations increased pot use beyond what it would otherwise have been.

Oh for crying out loud, there were several aspects to my assertion involving Hippies. There was little use of marijuana before the hippy movement, compared to after.

Maybe you’d like to take a look at this:

Probably not, but just check out the table of contents.

Most of which had no apparent relevance to this thread. If you'd like to start a new thread about hippies and external subversion, feel free.

Only a few sentences in I found the same logical fallacy you've been peddling:

"The financial rewards, according to that argument, are so enormous that there will always be evil forces willing to distribute narcotics for money. This complacent view is exploded by Red Cocaine: The Drugging of America and the West, which shows conclusively that the continuing Russian and Chinese Leninists have been using narcotics for several decades as a decisive weapon in the ongoing low-level warfare they are waging against Western civilisation."

Again, just because groups have been avidly working to make the sun rise in the east doesn't mean it wasn't going to happen anyway.

Nixon, Hippies, Drugs, the 60s....right the Soviets had nothing to do with it, nor any of the documents and organizations I laid out.

The 60s never happened!

The breakdown of society would not have just "happened anyway".

Everything I mentioned contributed to that, and was aggressively initiated and exacerbated by Soviet agent "community organizers" in the 60s or even earlier.

These are all components aimed at destroying American culture, fomenting the breakdown of the church (source of our moral code) and breakdown of the basic form of government in a free society...the nuclear family.

Most of which had no apparent relevance to this thread

The word "hippies" appears in the title, and they had everything to do with all the items I brought forward, including your favorite topic....drugs.
