Trump gives displaced IT workers attention, and he's not alone
ComputerWorld ^ | Mar 24, 2016 | Patrick Thibodeau

[...] It's not just senators and presidential candidates who are speaking out. Displaced IT professionals are telling about their experiences of having to train their visa-holding replacements. They are raising questions, and, increasingly, they are doing so in public.

The latest to do so is Craig Diangelo, a longtime employee at Northeast Utilities (now Eversource) until he trained his visa-holding replacement. He was laid off two years ago and has not spoken out about the incident because of a non-disparagement clause in his severance agreement.

The use of the visa at U.S. companies is an "epidemic" that has affected thousands, Diangelo said.

Approximately 200 IT workers at Eversource were laid off after the company hired India-based outsourcers Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services to provide IT services.

The non-disparagement clause in the severance package made former employees cautious about speaking out. But after two years since his layoff, Diangelo said he can no longer be silent.

With Blumenthal looking on, Diangelo said it was important for him to exercise his rights as an American.

"It's come to the point where the story has to get out," said Diangelo, who is calling for changes in the H-1B laws. "People have to stop being afraid of not being able to speak and doing everything anonymously."

Blumenthal has urged the company to drop the non-disparagement clause, which he calls a "gag order."

Eversource has defended itself, in part, by pointing out that its post-merger IT reorganization was needed to modernize its systems, and that it needed outside help to carry out the upgrades.

The utility also said that it only employs three people under a non-immigrant visa program. But Eversource is only describing its direct hires, not its contractor workforce. [...]

"One come back method is through becoming a contractor — not all of them are overseas sourced."

Well I've been considering that -- but lack experience doing it.
I'm looking into working from home too.

Any idea when Trump will have rallies? Haven’t seen one for a while.

I did catch a re-run of the AIPAC speech President Trump gave. The crowd went wild for him as he spoke like an American President should.

I could listen to him all day.

A friend of mine had the same thing happen. Lost the job then couldn’t find another fast enough, did several part time jobs instead not IT related. He had to sell his home and move half way across the country to his new job. Took a year to find that job.

Trump explained H-1Bs for his Florida holdings. Most positions are seasonal, therefore temporary. Americans simply aren't looking for part time and/or seasonal work.

Plenty of folks collecting unemployment here in NYS and perfectly happy not working or looking very hard.

Not at the wages The Donald is willing to pay.

The best way to find out is to get on the pinglist of PJBankard and/or Nikos1121, who do the rally threads. I do the twice-daily "Make America Great Again" summaries of the days' Trump news as posted on FR.

When he fires all those foreign workers and brings work back to US then and only then should we think he means what he says.

I was RIF’ed in 2003, 6 months after moving into a new house, and 4 months after the birth of my second child. It took me 6 months to get a job, paying 1/2 of what I was making. I worked there for 6 months, and was again RIF’ed. It only took me a month (thank God), to find work - as a contractor 3 hours away for the US Army (this would be Nov. of 2004 now). I worked for the contract company until May of 2005, then started where I am now in August of 2005, and by the grace of God, still here. I’m just now - 13 years later, back up to the salary I had in 2003. But, I never lost the house, etc.

I slept on the floor of a hotel room, sharing it with two other contractors during the week, would drive home after work on Fridays, spend time with my (by then) 3 children and wife, go to church on Sunday, laundry, spend time with the kids, and go to bed about 8 PM - to get up at 2 AM Monday and do the 3 hour drive back to the Army base and do it all over again. It was a grueling 6 months. But, we survived. Just keep your faith, and don’t give up.
