BEIRUT - Syrian government forces drove Islamic State fighters out of Palmyra on Sunday, the army said, inflicting a major defeat on the militants who seized the desert city last year and dynamited its ancient temples.
The army general command said in a statement that it had restored security and stability to the city in an operation it said showed that Islamic State was beginning to retreat and collapse.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said there were still clashes on the eastern edge of Palmyra, around the prison and inside the airport, but the bulk of the Islamic State force had withdrawn and retreated east, leaving Palmyra under President Bashar al-Assad's control.
Syrian state-run television broadcast from inside Palmyra on Sunday morning, showing largely deserted streets and several badly damaged buildings.
It quoted a military source saying Syrian and Russian jets were targeting Islamic State fighters as they fled, hitting dozens of vehicles on the roads leading east from the city.

This victory was a long time coming

I hope that some of the historic sites have not been damaged beyond repair.
I recall, back when we had president Clinton, when the Taliban were threatening to destroy some ancient statues of Buddha in Afghanistan. American college students, showing a level of worldliness and sophistication outdone only by today’s college students, engaged in a letter-writing campaign begging the Taliban to spare the statues. Of course, the Taliban took great glee in destroying the statues and disseminating pictures of the rubble.
I’m not sure if the Taliban morphed into Isis, or if Isis is a completely separate group. Either way, the goal to kill innocents and destroy priceless artifacts is a feature of Islamists. This is why the Islamists must be destroyed.
I saw an article last night about a woman raised as a Muslim, who was mutilated the way they mutilate little girls, and who went on to renounce Islam when she was 30. She said that the only real option for peace with Islam is to utterly destroy it in order to make room for a modern, civilized Islam to take hold. I cannot disagree.

I can. Once you've done humanity the service of destroying islam, why would you want a "modern, civilized islam"?
"Modern islam" is just 7th century islam with cell phones and nukes. And there's no such thing as "civilized islam". Islam is a fanatical cult which is 100% antithetical to civilization.

Sorry but the historical sites have been systemically blown up and leveled with heavy equipment. It is all pretty much gone.
What she was saying is that Islam needs to be replaced by a similar but peaceful religion that respects the rights of non-believers and does not kill and maim its own via Sharia law.
The thinking behind that is that it is a lot easier to get people to believe a non-violent form of the religion they have been indoctrinated in their whole lives than it is to get them to convert.
That is heartbreaking.
Evil Isis and their ilk want to destroy any evidence of a glorious past, because the future they want for everyone is so miserable.
