Hawaii lawmakers are asking how much marijuana a driver can safely consume before getting behind the wheel of a car.

It’s an issue they want to tackle now that Hawaii is setting up medical marijuana dispensaries. So Rep. Cindy Evans and 15 other lawmakers introduced a resolution asking the state Department of Health to study whether a person can safely drive while under the influence.

Marijuana is the illicit drug most frequently found in the blood of drivers who have been involved in accidents, including fatal ones, but the role marijuana plays in those accidents is often unclear because it can remain in the bloodstream for days and it’s often combined with alcohol, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says marijuana use impairs cognitive functions, lane tracking and other driving-related skills. …

Zero. People who drink and drive and smoke and drive are fools.

Just expect to be driving slower if you get behind one of these “medical” drivers.

Don't permit any. If it lasts for days, don't drive for days.

You don't get to use the excuses of "The 15 drinks I had remained in my bloodstream for hours" or "It's unclear whether it was the 0.2 alcohol level because there's also evidence of marijuana and other drugs in my body."

A lot depends on the THC levels in marijuana. The higher the rate, the more dangerous it is on perception and response times.

Anyone who smokes marijuana and drives should go to jail, just like anyone who drinks and drives. I lost a good friend and editor to a very drunk driver. He faced 5 years in jail because he was a serial drunk, and planned to fight it.

My friend’s father made him an offer he couldn’t refuse: “Go to jail or I will kill you”. The ahole went to jail, thus setting a precedence for the courts in handing out a severe sentence for killing someone while driving drunk. I think it has helped to save other lives.

Just hope they don't nod off or try to see how groovy it would be to drive backward.

IN other news, a women blasted through our neighborhood St. Pat's night (gee, maybe alcohol and/or who knows what?) in her Chevy Equinox and hit a F-250 (about 6,000 pounds or more) parked in a driveway and knocked it 40 feet. She was slowed a bit before that by hitting a large tree just off center. She lived. The car and truck didn't.
