Ted Cruz lashed out at Donald Trump on Wednesday for saying that women who get abortions illegally should be punished.
"Of course we shouldnt be talking about punishing women; we should affirm their dignity and the incredible gift they have to bring life into the world, he added. Trump was asked what a nationwide ban on abortion would look like in an interview with MSNBC's Chris Matthews.
The answer is that there has to be some form of punishment, Trump said.
For the woman? Matthews asked.
Yeah, there has to be some form, Trump responded.
Trump's comments sparked a firestorm. The celebrity businessman later attempted to walk back the comments in a statement released later on Wednesday.
If Congress were to pass legislation making abortion illegal and the federal courts upheld this legislation, or any state were permitted to ban abortion under state and federal law, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman, Trump said.
The woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb. My position has not changed like Ronald Reagan, I am pro-life with exceptions.

I know. Sad but true.
Well said. Once again, in this election, a curtain has been pulled back that can’t be conveniently dropped again as it once has been. Those who have been touting their values and principles on abortion must now choose what they really believe and stand on. If abortion is wrong, then all participants and enablers must be prevented. If the law says it’s illegal, then all must be punished.
However, it remains to be seen whether this nation and its people have become so equivocal and pandering in their views that they will crucify and banish anyone who says anything to that effect. It’s already happened with the LGBT issue. It appears that the same is going to follow for the murder of babies. It’s still true though, that the Courts Above aren’t concerned with our laws. The individual chooses and the individual pays. Even though it’s long delayed, it’s permanent.
That's the thing. It makes perfect sense to people who think normally. It's politicians who architect every sentence who know how to navigate this minefield. Trump is a breath of fresh air for stating simple truths without all the doublespeak.
If it is against the law damn right they should be punished. Ted Cruz must have satanic powers because so called conservatives on this site are beguiled by him and have given up their conservative (law abiding) views.
We cannot pick and choose what laws we must obey. Obey them all or we are screwed. What is wrong with you cruzers?
So a woman who visits an abotion clinic illegally is innocent but the doctor alone is guilty?
Of course there would. Drugs are illegal, and illegal drugs are available.
Want to answer the question?
Did I need a sarc tag ?
Yes, too many discussions to remember who said what in what context.
That happened at least 4 years ago when everyone lined up behind Romney and flamed those of us who did not.
flamed those of us who did not.
Oh, you mean Ronpaulistas.
I remember the flame wars more with EVERYONE against the Lil Martian-bots.
Why not?
A woman has a choice in birth control - if she is too lazy to use it, she shouldn’t be having sex.
Abortion is a sick and disgusting practice, and women are using it out of convenience. Let’s not pretend otherwise.
That would work for any other candidate except Cruz because:
He was married such a short time. Very bad.
He is running as the candidate ‘anointed by God’
There will always be a demand for it.
>> Cut him some slack. Trump is brand new at this ‘Conservative’ thingie <<
Good point. And at least Mr. Trump hasn’t yet claimed to be “severely” conservative!
>> If hes brave why did he walk his statement back a few hours later ? <<
Shame on you for asking such a logical question. Mr. Trump can do no wrong. Moreover, it is impossible for him to contradict himself. His original statement was correct, as was his correction to his original statement, as will be any of his future comments or statements on the issue.
First of all, I am very pro-life.
To answer your question...well I may not answer it to your expectations but...
If abortion was made illegal, I would assume that all “legal” abortion clinics would be closed.
And if someone performed an abortion when it was illegal, then they should be punished.
But when anyone suggests that the woman should be punished, they will never win that argument politically.
Trump should have gotten away from that question.
As you know, I am a Cruz supporter, but I fear that with Trump’s missteps on this issue he has given Hillary a huge opening for her “war on women” theme.
Actually, Trump established a principle that all GOP should follow, but which, of course, the GOPe will run away from.
I don’t know who wins what politically anymore. And I certainly don’t buy the “anti-woman” Trump polls. He could not win what he’s won so far if those polls were right.
Yep punish the car manufacturer when push pass the speed limit.
A armed robber gets punished.
A murderer get punished,
Even women who kill their children (special kind of sick) get punished.
Jaywalkers get punished.
Thieves get punished.
Embezzlers get punished.
The common thread? All are illegal acts by statute.
But, a women, who chooses to terminate the life of the infant within, once it is made illegal, she gets to walk.
It was a set up question the tingle was probably waiting for weeks to spring.
Trump was asked, if it was illegal, should the woman be punished? He answered from his heart, yes.
For Cruz to say the woman walks if it was illegal is not a conservative view, but a politically calculated expedient one, after seeing the chance to jockey for position.
Got's to say, Cruz knows politics.
