Donald Trump is Blowing Away GOP Field in NY, But There’s a Catch If He Fails to Do One Thing…

onald Trump’s broad support has helped him build a huge lead nationwide, and in less than three weeks, his home state could help him deliver a deathblow to his two remaining opponents.

He’s sitting pretty in New York, with a massive 36% lead over Ted Cruz, according to a Quinnipiac poll released Thursday:

But there’s a catch that his fans need to watch very carefully.

New York assigns its delegates to the national convention in a “hybrid” plan that gives a huge bonus if a candidate can clear 50%.

If Trump can reach 50% of the vote in the state, he automatically wins the state’s 14 “At-Large” delegates. In addition, he can clinch all three delegates from each of the state’s congressional districts by reaching 50% in those places.

But if he fails to reach those numbers, Ted Cruz and John Kasich can siphon away delegates from him and force Trump to find delegates in other states.

Trump fans probably shouldn’t worry about The Donald losing New York. He’s dominated polls in the Empire State, and he’s performed well in other states in the region. But if they want him to sail to the Republican nomination, clearing a majority is crucial.

New York votes on April 19th, with 95 delegates at stake.

I hope he gets more than the needed 50% — it’s time to get done with this R primary and focus on defeating Hillary.

No catch, Donald will walk away with a commanding win even bigger than his 56% polling.

Agree. He will get over 60%, likely 65% and win every CD. Cruz is absolutely despised here on the east coast. Any time he spends campaigning here, people will only dislike him more. The phony preacher act will not go over well and any attacks he makes on Trump will make people hate him more if that’s possible. He will get a small percentage of the vote in certain areas of upstate NY, but by and large he will be decimated across the state. It is a very real possibility that Trump may get all 95 delegates, but certainly north of 80.

You need to read that carefully. It is not sufficient to get greater than 50% of the vote in the state to get all the delegates. You only get all the delegates in each congressional district where you receive at least 50% of the vote. There are three delegates for each district.

Cruz is absolutely despised on the east coast. Any time he's here campaigning, people will dislike him more. The phony preacher act will not go over well and any attacks he makes on Trump will make people hate him more if that’s possible. He will get marginal votes in certain areas of upstate NY.......an area of chronic unemployment AND the area that became a joke when guards helped prisoners escape.........but, by and large, he will be decimated across the state.

Cruz/s disparaging remarks about "NY values" did not go over well.

Agreed, Cruz is despised in the northeast. I’m in PA, and people see through his act. They are more impressed with Trumps talk on border security and trade. Over 2600 people switched from Dem to Rep in my county alone, the ave from prior years is 200. Just saw it on my local news last night. The election staff say they have never seen anything like it. One guy said he is 72 years old and never saw a mass movement to a party like hr saw these last few months.
