The George Mason School of Law will be renamed in honor of the late U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia, who died earlier this year.
The university announced Thursday that it has received $30 million in combined gifts to the George Mason Foundation to support the law school, the largest gift in the universitys history. The donations make possible three new scholarship programs. Twenty million dollars came from an anonymous donor, and $10 million came from the Charles Koch Foundation, which has given millions of dollars to colleges in the United States. The family is well known for its support of conservative political groups, sometimes stirring controversy.
The Board of Visitors approved the renaming of the school to the Antonin Scalia School of Law at George Mason University. This is a milestone moment for the university, Ángel Cabrera, the universitys president, said in a statement. These gifts will create opportunities to attract and retain the best and brightest students, deliver on our mission of inclusive excellence, and continue our goal to make Mason one of the preeminent law schools in the country.
Leonard A. Leo, a member of the Federalist Society who was close with Scalia and his family, was approached by a donor who asked that the university name the law school in honor of the late justice, and offered a $20 million donation.

Smart move.
So, have any liberals weighed in and started bitching about this new name??????
Good, I hope that the faculty and students absorb his commitment to Constitutional governance.
That is awesome!
The Antonin Scalia School of Law or ASSOL for short. Probably could have used a little more planning on the acronym front.
That took courage.
so when will the snowflakes start screaming racism and panty wadding?
I disagree. Perhaps a Scalia chair or something like that. It’s nothing more than naming streets after MLK or something like that.
Like Richard Nixon’s 72 “Committee to Re-Elect the President” or CREEP. D’oh!
Great to honor a great man.
But this’ll really bring out the crazies-pass the popcorn.
And what of George Mason?
Father of the Bill of Rights.
Scion of the anti-Federalists.
How soon $30mm makes us forget.
Yep that acronym is not flattering. I hope they can do something about that. The name change itself is a great honor and fine recognition of a great Supreme Court justice. Let’s hope that the graduates of this law school will be inspired by Justice Scalia.
IIRC, G Mason is quite a liberal campus.
This is wonderful news! Perhaps GM will house Scalia’s papers.
Just more erasing of our founders.
