Donald Trump: Don't change abortion laws
CBS News ^ | April 1, 2016 | Jake Miller

Posted on 04/01/2016 4:29:09 PM PDT by ConservativeTeen

Donald Trump said Friday that he believes the laws regulating abortion should stay as they are, but he doesn't disagree with the proposition that abortion is murder.

The GOP frontrunner lit a fresh controversy this week with his shifting responses to a question on abortion policy. He said during an MSNBC town hall on Tuesday that he'd like to see the practice banned, and that women who undergo it should face "some form of punishment." But he quickly backtracked, explaining in a statement that while he believes it should be banned, the punishment should be levied on abortion providers, not the women seeking abortions.

Trump sought to clarify his position during an interview on Friday with "Face the Nation" moderator John Dickerson. The interview will air, in part, on Sunday's broadcast.

"A question was asked to me. And it was asked in a very hypothetical. And it was said, 'Illegal, illegal,'" Trump explained. "I've been told by some people that was an older line answer and that was an answer that was given on a, you know, basis of an older line from years ago on a very conservative basis."

Asked how he'd like to change the law to further restrict access to abortions, Trump replied, "The laws are set now on abortion and that's the way they're going to remain until they're changed."

"I would've preferred states' rights," he added. "I think it would've been better if it were up to the states. But right now, the laws are set....At this moment, the laws are set. And I think we have to leave it that way."

"Do you think abortion is murder?" Dickerson asked.

"I have my opinions on it, but I'd rather not comment on it," Trump replied.

"You said you were very pro-life," Dickerson followed up. "Pro-life means that...abortion is murder."

"I mean, I do have my opinions on it. I just don't think it's an appropriate forum," said Trump.

"But you don't disagree with that proposition, that it's murder?" Dickerson asked.

"No, I don't disagree with it," Trump eventually replied.

The back-and-forth over abortion wasn't the only political controversy involving Trump this week. He also stood by his campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, who's been charged with battery after allegedly grabbing a reporter's arm during a public event last month. And he suggested on Tuesday that he no longer feels bound by his pledge to support the eventual GOP nominee, complaining that the party has treated him "very unfairly."

Despite a chorus of critics assailing both moves, Trump told "Face the Nation" it hasn't been the worst week of his campaign.

"I think I've had many bad weeks and I've had many good weeks. I don't see this as the worst week in my campaign," he said. "But certainly, I've had some weeks, and you've been reporting on them, where that was the end. And then the next week, you see poll numbers where they went up and everybody's shocked."

"So yeah, people want to stop me because I'm leading by a lot," he added.

The 10th Amendment must be restored, and abortion made illegal state by state. There is no instant remedy..

I am totally with Donald Trump. I am an avid states righter and I firmly believe that abortion and gay marriage are states rights issues.

I do too, and the states and courts are where the abortion issue is being thought.

But what do you think about the laws should stay as they are?

Freeze these issues in 2016?

I've voted for one democrat in my life for major office, Glen Poshard, because he was pro life and pro gun, and a tax and spend liberal. His opponent, George Ryan was "pro life" and "pro gun", with the caveat that the laws are the laws and should stay as they are. Stay as they are is not leadership, unless the leader is comfortable with current policy.

Look I understand too little too late
I realize there are things you say and do
You can never take back
But what would you be if you didn't even try?
You have to try
So after a lot of thought
I'd like to reconsider
Please if it's not too late

Roe v wade is not going to get overturned anytime soon. The sad fact that the Supreme Court is well aware of is that a majority of Americans don’t want it overturned. Unless we get several more conservatives on the bench they will not move to overturn. Trump is aware of it and is just facing reality as it currently exists.

So healthcare for everyone should remain legal because it is the law now?

I can not agree with that.

Laws in the states don't have to stay the way they are. Even federal law doesn't, that's up to legislatures hopefully with leadership from a chief executive. You're correct that Roe won't be overturned, but that fact doesn't freeze legislation in place. Inaction does freeze public opinion in place. Not necessarily referring to Trump here, his positions are flexible.

Have you seen any indication that post Heller the left has given up on gun control based on the premise that, heck, it's the law. Or marriage. Or much of anything.

IMO Trump has no longstanding, set views on any major issues.

And your opinion is mis/ill-informed. Go to the site “On the Issues” and check Trump’s positions over the years. Or read some of his books, or watch some of his old interviews.

Keep in mind that any article quoting or repeating (paraphrasing or direct quote) what Trump said is either leaving out context, or the whole statement, or other.

The only way to find out what Trump really thinks and says is to listen to him directly, not “through” anyone else. The entire MSM and political establishment of both parties hate him with virulence and lie, lie, lie.

As article states....”Trump said Friday that he believes the laws regulating abortion should stay as they are, but he doesn’t disagree with the proposition that abortion is murder.”....

So he’s agreeing then that abortion is murder but will make no effort to change the laws to stop it. Therefore Trump supports the killing of babies.

Not just dominating the primaries, slaying the Red States as a first time private citizen winning the South over Cruz and Rubio.

Trump trounced Rubio and Bush in Florida. Bush dropped out in S Carolina to stop the narrative that a former sitting Govenor was beat by a first time North East candidate in the same state. Trump TROUNCED Rubio in Florida.

Cruz had the LOWEST recent votes for a Texas Senator in his so called home state. (not his true home state in that he is Canadian). But Cruz did not win Texas by any landslide. Cruz already had the ground game in Texas, and Trump was still a HUGE amount of votes for a first time candidate who is not accepting Super Pac money. If he RNC would support Trump, they would have such a positive grass roots support story to tell. Because Trump has triumphed because voters know he will put America first and put our best interests first and that he is a patriot.

What a story the RNC could tell if/when they support Trump. What Trump has done with outside campaign influence has been astounding. Go Trump, Never Give Up!

If you are speaking of life of the mother, it’s almost never necessary to have an abortion to save the mother’s life.

If the mother has a tubular pregnancy, for instance, then she must have a surgery to remove the tube in question so it doesn’t burst, which when that happens, unfortunately, the baby dies, but that is not referred to as abortion. The baby’s death is an unfortunate end due to the surgery [to save the mother’s life].

It’s a moot point. He’ll likely win the nomination, and then get crushed in the general election.

And we’ll all lose as Hillary further destroys the country.

Trump certainly has little memory or he wouldn’t be on both sides of the same issue.....furthermore he cannot sustain his positions without loosing supporters....so he will continue to backtrack and or ride the fence....whichever will satisfy the moment he is in at any given time.

Right now about all a state can do is just create a hostile environment for abortion. Which they should do. And some are.
