Donald Trump: ‘The Laws Are Set’ on Abortion, ‘I Think We Have to Leave It that Way’

Two days after GOP presidential contender Donald Trump caused a firestorm after walking back his statement that women who have illegal abortions should receive some form of “punishment,” he said during another interview that abortion “laws are set,” and they should be left that way until changed.

In an interview on CBS’ Face the Nation – the broadcast of which will be aired on Sunday – Trump again attempted to clarify his views to moderator John Dickerson.

When asked by Dickerson – from a pro-abortion perspective — “What would you do to further restrict access to abortion?” Trump responded, “The laws are set now on abortion and that’s the way they’re going to remain until they’re changed.”

“A question was asked to me. And it was asked in a very hypothetical,” Trump explained about his prior MSNBC interview with Chris Matthews. “And it was said, ‘Illegal, illegal.’ I’ve been told by some people that was an older line answer and that was an answer that was given on a, you know, basis of an older line from years ago on a very conservative basis.”

When Dickerson mentioned a prior Bloomberg interview during which Trump reportedly said he believed abortion should be banned after a certain point in pregnancy, Trump replied, “I would’ve preferred states’ rights. I think it would’ve been better if it were up to the states. But right now, the laws are set….At this moment, the laws are set. And I think we have to leave it that way.”

“Do you think abortion is murder?” Dickerson asked. After considering the question for several moments, Trump responded, “I have my opinions on it, but I’d rather not comment on it.”

“You said you were very pro-life,” Dickerson followed up. “Pro-life means that…abortion is murder.”

Oh, Trump is SO brave! He told the world abortion should stand and told the NY Times his wall building is a sham.

Yep. Almost as brave as standing on the floor of the U. S. Senate and reading Green Eggs & Ham. Now that was a profile in courage.

Gag order on churches? Where are they prohibited from preaching the 10 commandments? Thou shall not commit murder. This is the one thing that has frustrated me for all these years. Pastors are not stepping up. I don’t care if abortion is legal, if a woman doesn’t want one because she understands it is murder, no one is going to force her to have one. This just makes me crazy when I think about it too much.

Because the first American revolution was started in churches with the assembly and gathering of like minded people discussing political issues of the day. LBJ pushing his liberal agenda knew that it had to be stopped so he created the Tax laws that will strip a church of its tax exempt status if they do any of the 1st, or 4th amendment activities relating to politics - unless they are non-white or non-christian.

So yes its a federal gag order on white Christian churches to discuss nothing politically or get fined massive tax dollars.

Well said. Education is the key to change. I’ll add one more thing: since black babies are aborted much more likely than others, this is racially-charged at the black’s disenfranchisement, as PP’s founder Margaret Sanger intended.

I believe that if we just start talking about abortion honestly, and draw attention to the fact that it is about fat profits for exploitative psychopaths--we might get some tantrums from the pro-aborts for a while, but we would eventually prevail. Once we get more people to internalize the fact that abortion is not about women's rights, but about unethical profit, then discussing the fact that abortion businesses disproportionately target blacks will have more impact. It already has had impact--pro-aborts now accuse us of not trusting black women to make up their own minds. We just need to keep hammering away at these things, they are having an effect.

(This is taking a page directly from the leftist playbook--leftists just start talking about something not as it is, but as they want it to be. This is how they convinced people that "gay marriage" has actually been a reality all along, and that the only reason it was illegal is that evangelicals tramped on people's rights and made it illegal. Once they got people to internalize their fantasy narrative, it was a simple matter to get the Supreme Court to declare the legality of "gay marriage," even though the concept remains nonsensical.)

>> I think he just goes, now what would a extreme conservative say in this situation, and then answers <<

Oh, c'mon on. Don't be so cynical. We all know that, deep down in his heart of hearts, Mr. Trump is severely conservative.

It may be overturned ie modified but abortion will not be criminalized

Like it or not I believe a great many Americans may find abortion to be not their personal choice but will never embrace a law or a culture that criminalizes that choice except in cases of termination of the unborn life of a viable child

Trump is correct
The ship sailed
Don’t shoot the messenger

The most productive battleground is in the states and in the culture that exposes young women to the reality of their choices
Not the job of the POTUS
but having a POTUS whose administration is not hostile to state rights and religiousity in public life would be a great advancement
Trump has spoken out about both

These aren't his core beliefs.

So, just WHAT are his core beliefs? That is my problem with Trump, I don't know just what he truly believes other than to close the deal! What kind of deal, I don't know.

By the time Ronald Reagan ran we knew what he believed because he had been preaching it since Goldwater ran in 1964.

"Is Cruz brave enough to say this?"

Say what? This?

Trump responded, "I have my opinions on it, but I’d rather not comment on it."

I understand what you are saying. If they would of appointed judges like Scalia it would of been overturned.
That they had the power to do

That is a complete fabrication of what someone would think when asked the question “In your opinion, what are the top three functions of the United States government?”

He was not asked about state roles or local roles.

He was asked about United States roles. He is running for President of the Untied States.

Do you understand what is meant by the United States?

Spin must be your specialty, but that spin just won’t fly.

Very true and if Dems step in a big pile, they say they “mispoke” or that their view is “evolving”...

"Nothing c Not so.

State regulations have shut down hundreds of clinics in the past 5 years alone. Close off all public and insurance-based funding, and 90% of them would shut down.

As for Pro life movement, they HATE Trump. They are a single issue organization. They will only vote for a candidate that swears he will repeal abortion, even if said candidate will have no chance of winning.

Instead they could support the very viable Trump, hold their nose and let him move the ball back in the right direction, propelling us toward a friendlier supreme court which might eventually fulfill their goals!

Yep. The grass roots really are abused by the GOP. The “pro-life” establishment is a wholly paid for subsidiary of the GOPe. Note how they pump every meaningless defund show vote in Congress to the benefit of the GOPe. The GOP panders to the base on social issues with no intention of EVER following through. The GOP had all 3 branches when W. was POTUS and did NOTHING.

Actually you are the fabricator making up stuff to help the enemies of America. At no time in this campaign has Trump said anything to support your talking point. And a Basic civics lesson proves me right, Only in liberal la la land does Untied States mean just federal government since they are the central government types.

Your argument is the same as the left wings central government one. Take you fabrications fake outrage and liberal talking points back to the Democrat cam since you are doing their work for them.

“A form of punishment could be as simple as a class on human development and a mandatory review of sonograms of unborn babies.”

That’s quite an insignificant sentence for murder, don’t you think?

This controversy highlights a big problem of consistency and intellectual honesty in the pro-life camp.

They want to define all abortions as murder yet don’t want to impose the punishment for murder on the perpetrators.

Something is very wrong with that position. Trump is not the only one who needs to think about this - the whole pro-life movement is clueless.

These aren't his core beliefs. He has listened to conservatives on alot of issues, and has been doing his best to emulate them since he started running for president. Not being a core belief means, sometimes he answers the questions weird or even wrong.

Correct. We don't even really know what Trump's core beliefs are on most issues. For purposes of running for President, Donald is just saying what he thinks a conservative would want to hear. It is about as obvious as it can get what he is up to, but Trumpsters don't want to hear it. With the hard core Trump supporter, you just can't break through that cult of personality that keeps them entranced with him.
