I walked a mile to and from school in Kindergarten, then either rode a bike, walked or took the bus until high school.

In Jr. high my dad punished once (for good reason) by taking my bike away for a month and made me walk 2 miles to school, except I’d walk around the block to a buddy’s house and we’d double up on his bike and ride there.

High School was 3 miles away and whenever I got a detention and missed the bus my Mom said I had to find a way home. That’s when I started hitchhiking regularly. Most days was there was little wait for a ride as the neighborhood ice cream man passed the school on his route and he’d give me a ride to the house.

Happened here, too.
A gal just down the road from me told her kids that if they had to stay after school so she’d have to come and get them, they would have to walk home.
The kid did, and she did.
Some nosey ol hag called the cops because it was getting dark in the winter an mom was following the kid w/lights on so no one would hit her.
No charges were filed but a great mom won’t do that again.

One of my neighbors had a similar incident. We’re 2 1/2 miles out and she told her kids that if they had to stay after school for misbehavior and she had to come after them, they would have to walk home.
As it was late in the afternoon and getting darkish, she followed with the lights on and some old hag called the cops saying she was threatening the little brat.
No charges were filed, but she won’t do that again.

Now all the Mamas and their teenaged daughters wear nighties to church.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

I’ve seen men in pajamas at my local A&P before it went under.

I made my children walk to finish a trip to church by walking ( about 3/4ths of a mile) . They had been squabbling with each other. I calmly told, “ I am not having a good time.”, and shoved them out of the car. Ah! The power of natural consequences! They made to church without being kidnapped.

Ha! You were lucky. We lived for three months in a brown paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six o’clock in the morning, clean the bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down mill for fourteen hours a day week in-week out. When we got home, out Dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt!

You had a bag?? I wish I were that fortunate...
